Not the Fridge Again

Submitted: Monday, May 01, 2006 at 08:22

Wayne (NSW)

I had to replace the old Engel of 20 years a few weeks ago (post 31979).

Through some arm bending from our Corporate Division, Vic was able to get a new fridge out of Engel and I could have his old one.( One owner, 3 years old, never been off road, never been set to freeze, you know the story.)

I had 4 days between trips and I needed to remove the fridge slide from the vehicle so that I could fix a air leak on the Big Red compressor. Rather than removing the fridge I took the slide out with the fridge still attached. This slide is very long and with the fridge still attached was a bit heavy. To get into the workshop I stood it upright and wheeled it in. This meant the fridge was vertical with the motor facing up.

Fixed the Big Red replaced the fridge slide wired up the fridge again and checked to see if it was running. Light on motor humming.

Packed the fridge and turned it on and headed to the Vic High Country. Got to Bright and checked the fridge, light on, motor humming but it was not cold. Bugger!!!

Then as we were heading out of Bright on the start of the trip I remembered I had heard somewhere that if a fridge was turned on its side and then not work, give it a shake.

The first part of the trip was over some rough ground and this would have shaken the fridge so when we stopped for lunch, the light was on the motor humming and the beer cold.

The moral of this story is to keep your fridge is working make sure it goes out on a rough track.
