Oztrail Canvas Tourer Tents

Submitted: Thursday, Jun 01, 2006 at 05:10

garbage

Hi,

Does anyone have any experience with the Oztrail Canvas Tourer Tents? They're considerably cheaper than Primus/COI (~$600), Black Wolf (~$800), Oztent and Southern Cross Canvas. I'm just wondering if the waterproof qualities of the tent are up to scratch, given the price.

Regards,

Han.

hi garb,

we looked at all those tents but ended up with an oztrail 9plus,
takes very little time to set up and has a heap of room for gear.

you may want to consider a ground sheet in damp conditions which isn't a problem cos' that our preference anyway.

All up we are happy with the bang we got for our buck

Yep! I have a Oztrail Tourer 9 Plus, the floor is woven Polypropylene and not PVC but it is thick enough to withstand considerable use. The bottom of the door zip will let water in if raining heavy if the awning is erected, this is fairly normal for most tents like this. Just drop the awning in rain or zip it up. The rest of it is waterproof and great. I am going to buy a Oztrail Tourer 9 for the boys and get rid of their older hard to erect tent now. I'm happy. Michael

Same with us, we've an Oztrail 9 plus and it is a good tent. Before using it we set it up in the backyard and gave it a good soaking 3 times, allowing it to dry between each shower.
During our first trip using it we had rain on 2 occassions and no water came in at all.
Good tent which although we don't use it often we know it will keep us dry and with the extra capacity of the "plus" there's room for a fair bit of gear inside as well.
Happy camping.

You should look at the Black wolf. I used mine for the first time at Easter. Had 2 days of heavy rain and wind. Tent was great no leaks and it didnt move at all. Worth the extra cash.

got the tourer 10plus, very happy with it.
yes, the floor is not as thick as the southern cross and maybe the canvas isn't as heavy (i'm not sure) but apart from that, its 1/3 the price of a southern.

we have always put a tarp under our tents anyway and yes, it did leak at the bottom of the door when we left the awning up.

We've got the 9Plus, had it for a couple of years now. Yes its a lighter canvas than the Southern Cross, but its lighter to lift too. Only time it leaked on us was a christmas before last. Torrential thunder storm hit the park we were in. the seam under the rear cross bar coped most of the runoff from the tarp and a bit in the front door zipper.

The three friends we were with copped a complete soaking, sleeping bags, clothes, not much dry except what was in the cars.

For the money, great value. just treat them with respect and don't pack them away wet and they should last you for years.
