i recently came back from a 6 week outback/desert run in my 03 TD and required nothing not even a flat,as long as the vehicle is set up for where and what you want to do it will be fine cheers Paul

It is all depends how remote are you planning to go....

Gloves, 2 straps, jack, jacking plate, rated hooks,2 x bow shackles.
Tyre gauge, Air Compressor, Sand Flag
Radiator hoses - top and bottom, heater hose
serpantine belt, fuel filter, air filter,
wheel nuts and studs,
1lt engine,gearbox/diff/trans oil
Spare shocker washers, rubbers, locators, and mounting bolts including spare front and rear shock
2 spare tyres, tyre repair equipment
Rated recovery points front and rear

For the usual run around the block plus deviations you don't need spares, just regular good servicing.

There are plenty of service centres and that is a common vehicle.

More likely a vehicle would fail in a city where it does the slow stuff in traffic.

If you get interested in tough stuff in remote areas you are better off tagging along with an experienced person or club and in that case you would be getting some experience and training up-front which would include vehicle set-up, supplies, communications and so on.

Along with thousands of others I've towed vans around Oz with family sedans in the early 70's when roads were much less well-developed. Never had a problem. Our 100 Series 4.2 TD is a luxury behemoth compared with a secondhand sixties Falcon auto.

I am amazed at the largely unnecessary fitout (and weight) of the fourbies cruising Oz. They are testament to the power of aftermarket equipment advertising. With the greatest respect to all concerned, the aftermarket stuff breaks before the vehicle though.

Use common sense, have fun and don't sweat it.

Just in case we might have had a little misunderstanding. Of course I will apply common sense and of course the vehicle will be fitted out accordingly to what we intend to do.

I was simply looking for some kind of useful feedback on real spare parts only. Of course we will have the appropriate recovery gear and I agree, that with a relatively new 4WD we shouldn't experience too much trouble.

Nevertheless I always like to hear other opinions.
