Pilbra Mine Tour

Submitted: Friday, Jun 02, 2006 at 19:36

Wiskers

We are travelling through the Pilbra in August and would like to undertake a good Mine Tour. Can anyone give us the name of the best Mine Tour from either of Newman, Tom Price or Paraburdoo ?
Thanks in advance for any positive replies.

We did the Tom Price Mine Tour last year and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Cost I think, was $17pp

The mine at Newman is supposed to be bigger but we were there on the wrong day. I think it was a Sunday.

You can get a free view of the Superpit at Kalgoorlie. It is awesome.

Cheers

The machinery graveyards are staggeringly awesome if you can get a look. Rows and rows of often driveable goodies. Dreamworld.

We went over the huge Mt Whaleback pit at Newman and thought it well worth it. Cost only a few dollars. See post 34128

My son is out at Para at the moment, and tells me the Tom Price one is good value.

Comet gold mine about 10k south of Marble Bar . Historic , includes underground and smelter. Very interesting from the aspect of how high tech they were in the 1890's . Comet mine provided Marble Bar with AC power when Perth was on 32v DC .

Having done both Tom Price and Newman I'd say do the Newman tour. The size of the pit and info stats they give you is awsome, eg, the water table starts at bench 19, several pumps pull approx 70 million litres per week out of the pit... that sort of stuff! Find the tourist info building, its the one with the Haulpac parked out the front, and they'll sort you out

Hi Wiskers,

Tom Price would be the pick of the bunch.

If your go to Tom Price dont forget to take a drive up to the top of mount nameless as it gives a great view of the mine and surrounds.

Don’t take a trailer or van up there as it is fairly steep.

Regards,

Matt

Thanks for all your responces. We have decided to have a look at Tom Price Mine, Newman Mine and then do a Mine Tour of Kalgoorlie. I know if we don't see these things when we have the opportunity, we will probably regret it, when we get home. We won't be back in the area for a long while so may as well see all we can this time.
Thanks once again.
Wiskers.

We did the Tom Price tour last year - very well done - amazing place. didn't get to Newman - maybe next time - but Kalgoorlie Superpit is immense - the tourist place just out of town is pretty good and worthwhile visiting as well - gives a lot of the history of the area - and you get to do a little panning for gold with an old time miner. We enjoyed it.
