Landcruiser - Factory Diff Locks

Hi all
just wondering if anyone can tell me how the genuine Toyota diff locks are activated ie electrically,mechanically or are they like ARB air lockers ???
Anyone with them fitted to a L'Cruiser what are they like good,bad or indifferent
any thoughts appreciated cheers Barry

As of last week per the info sheet given me by local Toyota dealer they are available but only on the models with live axles ie Troopy,trayback and stnd wagon

Hi Barry
I have two trucks with the factory lockers
They are electric and ecu controlled, so it is hard to damage them
They work extremely well and I have had not problems.
One truck has been in many competitions and extreme off roading
Can be activated even if the electrics go down

When you order the 79series, go for the factory lockers. It will be a 3 month wait while they build the truck, but they work fine and you won't have warranty issues.

You'll enjoy the truck.

I see you have a GSV canopy? I was at their factory last week to look at a mobile health clinic they are building for the NT. I was VERY impresed with the workmanship - probably the best I have seen and Albert and Julie would be 2 of the nicest people I've met al be it briefly.

We have the tray and canopy fitted and I'm about to design a dust proof module to slide in (and slide out priciple so we can use as straight tray when required).

Are you happy with your rig and any advice would be appreciated.

Yeah, GSV was the best quality "box" and all custom made. Word has spread - they are charging a lot more for a box than when I got them to do mine over a year ago. Albert is a good guy to deal with. Nice to deal with a guy in overalls who can give you an answer to everything you ask.

Now that there is only the mrs and me we have decided to change from a 100 series and camper trailer to the 79 and trayback camper so I can tow the boat
a little bit concerned about comfort trade off time will tell

Send a member message to Luxoluk. He was having quite a few problems with his on the new troopy both prior to and during our trip in March. I don't know if they are resolved or if they know what's causing the issues yet.

Have rear factory locker on a 2001 GXV. No problems with the locker. My observations are as follows
1.Will only work on low range. There is a MOD to change this, it is as simple as cutting one wire and grounding it to bypass the fact that the system need to be on low range.
2. sometimes takes a while to engage, I jacked the vehicle up and worked out wherethe locker will engage, there was five positions only when rotating one wheel on the air. The diff needs to be lined up before the pin will drop in.
3. sometimes slow to disengage, due to needing to take the pressure off the back axle, similair to unlocking 4wd to 2wd.

I believe the Air locker is much more instant. Dont see this as a problem on the back, but if you are needing to steer, then the front may annoy you a little. (Although I dont have any experience with the front factory locker, inly going by the way the back works)

Yes yhey are a bit slower than air lockers, no I do not have any problems if one plans ahead
Diff locks should be engaged before they are needed not when you have come to a stop. and in competitions one tends to ruun most of the time with lockers in.
Learning to drive with lockers in all the time takes a little practice and a little more engine imput to help cornering. you will climb better and have much safer descents as one wheel can not lock up or loose traction
You can also remove the ICU unit and hard wire the lockers this makes them operate faster but you loose the protection to prevent engageing if one wheel is spining faster than the other.
