Has anybody out there have a Patrol ZD 30 series 111 approaching high KM's. Have you had any notcible issues that relate to its past issues or just the run of mill wear and tear?

I've got a GU11, 176.000 ks, motor sweet as a nut? Had a gearbox rebuild etc early on but all done under warranty. Motor hasn't been touched, changed oil every 5000ks filter every 10,000. Had the oil capacity mod early in it's life.

Yes, I have towed a 1.8 tonne van for over 50% of the time too. Just keeps on going, and I don't tow all that slow either, try to keep with the traffic and not hold up our truck driving mates out there. It is a June 2000 build so it has the most highly suspect of the 3.00litre motors. I have had a few mates who have had the engine problems but all of them bought the vehicle at auction and all but one was an ex police vehicle, the other one was a fireies support vehicle so I reckon they probably suffered from poor service history and too much high rev flogging.

I have the ZD30 Engine in my 2004 Silber Nabara Sereis II (Same Engine), just had the 50,000 km serv done. At this point it is going well, no major issues. Although I have had to get the Turbo outlet hoses replaced due to oil seepage. The new synthetic Nissan oil causes this as it is thinner. It finds it way out of the positive crankcase vent (as they don't have a valve) and into the intake (this occures in about 90% of all turbo diesels). The problem was not noticeable until the oil type was changed, I am sure that it seeps through the rubber more readily than the older type of Nissan oil. It is my understanding that the newer Nissan oil is supposed to solve the over heating problems caused from excessive carbon build up (the cause of most of the earlier ZD30 engines problems) better cleaning properties, better cooling etc. Just for piece of mind I change the oil every 5000 km regardless of what the maintenance manual/Nissan say. I hope that this helps. Regards Smitty.

Thank you to all, nice to hear some support out there. The 3ltr is Nissan's biggest seller so you would assume they have it right by now. Good to put those extra dollars into mods instead of the 4.2

Hi Richard,

I have a 2003 GUIII ZD30 ST-L since new. I put in a D-tronic chip and OME spring and shocks when new and have just had the 60,000km service done last week. No problems with the truck so far. About to do another 3 week trip to the Simpson, Chambers pillar, Uluru and the Flinders Ranges...hoping the truck will continue to run smoothly.

I've found the D-Tronic a big improvement to the drivability of the Patrol, especially the low end torque, it used to be quite sluggish but is now quite usuable.

My Gu is a 2000 model and the engine failed at 118,000 without warning.
The Nissan speel about increased sump level fixing the problem is bull,as mine was modified by recall and the engine still failed.
There is a manufacturing or design fault with the first model and the failures are random across this group,if you search this site you will find reems of information on these failures.
Sorry to depress you,but you need to be aware that the early models are all suspect and Nissan is rolling back the engine replacement program, you would be advised to write to Nissan public relations and register your concerns so it is on their file.

Is it only the early models that are effected. If its not the sump level it would be nice to know what they did to rectify the problem

David from David and Justine Olsen's 4WD Tag-Along posted:

According to my contact at Nissan, all failed engines were in vehicles doing highway work. He says engine oil level is critical, and when doing high speed or hard work towing work, the engines use oil to a point where the oil level drops to critical. His advice was use the correct oil, and check it DAILY, and he said if you do that, you will have no problems.

G'Day David, So will keep her topped up at all times and all should be good, still seems a pain if you have to check daily though.

Series 1, 2001. Has don 180,000. Gets an oil and filter change at 5 - 10,000 kms.
Has been up the mountains, across deserts, towed camper trailer and is daily drive. Does about 500 ks per week for work.
Problems? High cost of fuel. Steering wheel not straight (yet). Ummmmm. Can't think of anything else. Has 275/75 R16s which fixed the speedo. Notn much else to report.

Thankyou all, seems positive overall for the current models and yours OldMike has certainly seen some action and done the job. Patrol Man has had no issue's seems to me that my original question plus research on the rest of the Forum show only concrete evidence from the eary patrols having issues. I feel fairly confident that all will be good for my 05 but it would appaer the ZD 30 may hang onto a reputation thats handed down regardless of wether its been recitfied or not. Cheers
