WEST KUNDERANG

Following on from the post "Where Would You Go Back To And Why?" There was an expression of interest in West Kunderang. The following is posted for those who may find it of interest.

WEST KUNDERANG - A freehold cattle run totally surrounded by the Oxley Wild Rivers National Park & Wilderness Area. There is no permanent residence on the property.

LOCATION - Approx: 100Klm east off Armidale and 190 Klm north west of Kempsey,
located on the Macleay River in the gorge country.

FACILITIES - Five individual and well separated campsites four of which have a concrete bordered sand filled fire pit with swing over barbecue plate, grill and bar with chain and hooks together with stainless steel sink and draining board (mounted on star pickets) and wooden table and benches. There is of course a "quaint" long drop at each camp.
Well seasoned hardwood is supplied and tank water is available from the cattle yard. There is also a cabin available for hire.

No more than five parties are admitted at any time, during the week you may well have the entire property to yourself as my wife and I found.

ACTIVITIES - What may well be some of the best fly or lure Bass fishing you may ever experience, in addition to which there are Fresh Water Herring, Mullet and Catfish. Spectacular River Gorge bush walking and exploration by four wheel drive. You must however stay on existing tracks. There are kangaroo, wallaby, platypus. tortoise and an interesting array of bird life (some fantastic gold and turquoise Kingfishers). Beautiful swimming holes abound along the river.
By previous arrangement 1/2, 1 day or overnight horse treks or guided Bass Fishing trips (all gear and meals supplied where necessary). A couple of canoes are also available for hire. If you get bored you may talk to the goannas who visit the camp sites and the stock horses in the top paddock are always happy to have a chat.

SAFETY/COMMS: - There is no electricity on the property but Cindy has spent a bleep load of money installing a satellite phone at the cabin together with the solar panel/battery array to drive the same. The phone is preprogrammed for Cindy's mobile, together with Police, Ambulance, Rural Fire Service, Hospital etc:. If you can't go bush without contacting your office or bookie you can purchase the appropriate phone card at the time of your booking.

GENERAL INFO - Absolutely no shooting, no motor/quad bikes or unregistered vehicles. Fishing licenses must be produced. No soap/washing in the river. All rubbish must be bought out with you, bottle caps, bread ties, cans and paper.
Only the bravest would take a caravan into Kunderang, in the last 6 Klm you drop from the level of the New England Plains/Coastal Range to river level, a really spectacular drive. There is a caravan on the property however I don't believe that whoever took it in had intentions of taking it out again. The problem would be one of overheating on the very steep grind out of the property. I towed my camper trailer up in low range second, sometimes getting into third only to change down again.

Here comes the usual disclaimer "I am in no way connected etc: etc: blah, blah. I'm just a very happy little camper who has been trying to get back to Kunderang and getting sidetracked or having my leave cancelled.

Ian

Although 4x4 isn't required to access unless towing, a 2wd will need some clearance etc.
