Hey everyone,

When the car went to the mechanics the other week for a service I got into trouble for not using premium unleaded.... he says do 3 tanks of it and you'll see the difference.
We use to use premium in our Ford until Mark saw a story on the fuel comparison between them on one of the night current affairs show. The end results was that there wasn't really any difference between the fuels, so we went back to using unleaded in the Ford and honestly could tell a difference.
So to give our mechanics words a fair go I filled up the pajero with premium. Cost me $100 bucks, an extra $5 for premium, no big deal on that. But a big deal on my fuel consumption.
When I fill will unleaded, I get anywhere between 180-200 kms per quarter of a tank. Normal driving, not speeding or revving chite out of car, just normal general take it easy watch fuel consumption driving. I filled up with premium and what driving I did which was no different to any other day, in two days chewed half a tank of fuel and left me with half a tank.
So while fuel was still 'cheap', I topped up the tank yesterday afternoon ($55), back to full. Since last night I have driven a total of 71kms and it has chewed a quarter of a tank already compared to unleaded 180-200km per quarter!. End result for me, stuff premium.. at that rate using premium it will cost me $250 odd a week in fuel. Back to good ol unleaded.

Premium has a higher octane which is for high compression/performace engines to stop them pinging. If you have a non turbo engine, chances are its not really high compression and premium will do nothing. To prove a point, I ran premium rice in a wrx for ages untill I was getting rid of it one day I put in regular, I got an instant 50 to 80km more per tank EVERY time. I could not believe it and felt ripped for the whole time I had this supposedly high performance car requiring premium. So never again. It is only for some model engines which will ping badly with lower octane, the energy content w/w I think is no different!!

Well my experience is at the other end of the scale.
The EL XR6 5 speed manual we had used to go around 650km in 5th gear with the cruise control set on around 105kph. High way running that is on normal unleaded.
On Shell Optimax or BP Ultima it use to go around 750 km doing exactly the same thing.

I'd be buying my fuel from another service station because it's quite possible you're not getting what you're paying for.

I Tend to agree Bigcol, I actually have a subaru liberty with the standard 2.2L engine. Every second weekend we take that car from Sydney to Bathurst over the blue mountains with four people in it , Running on premium is like i have another 10 HP.

I have had varying results. In both my XR8 and Terracan I found no difference in general driving.

However, towing is a different matter. A few years back I was towing a 17 foot fibreglass runabout with a 2.6L Magna. Premium unleaded made a significant difference, especially going uphill. Just last weekend I experienced the same with the Terracan towing our Jayco Eagle; on the way home I was sailing up hills a gear higher with 95 octane United Ethanol blend. The trip over on regular unleaded was noticeably harder up the hills.

Funny how their can be such differences between some vehicles who use premium and normal.
I only every fill up at one service station.. have been caught out at too many where you don't get all what you are paying for. I found the Caltex servo just down the road from us I get what I pay for (with unleaded) and the fuel definately lasts longer. But obviously it won't last longer in the Paj using premium!

What brand fuel did you buy? In my Pajero (3.5L) I find I get 1-2L/100km BETTER economy on Shell Optimax (98 octane in Vic) compared to Shell ULP (91 octane). It's consistently better.

Yet "another" company's 98 octane saw 18-20% increase in consumption. I honestly think that the couple of times I've tried that particular "premium" fuel, it's either been watered down with much more than 10% ethanol, or they've had 91 octane E10 in the storage tank instead. Other people have reported it as having very variable performance, one tank is crap, the next fantastic. Bit like free range eggs being substituted with cage eggs :-)

It was the Caltex Vortex.
our paj when I use plain unleaded is 10.2Lt per 100kms... didn't dare add up the figures for the prem!!

I don't trust caltex anymore. Filled up with their diesel one day on the way home and the car felt like it lost the turbo, a very definate drop in power after leaving the servo, ok I let that one go, might not have been the fuel, maybe just a one-off 'something', strangely enough I got the power back after refilling with bp on the next fill.
Had a few slight power losses since then, after filling with caltex, seat of the pants feel only, not every time, haven't kept a record, but seems quite often with that brand.
Today was the last straw and the end of using caltex for me, I can usually stand the KTM up on the back wheel just under power in second, no clutch, with no problem, I usually use bp ultimate.
Filled up today in a smaller Nthn NSW town whilst on a ride , couldn't find bp, so filled with the next best thing I could find, caltex vortex (95 octane), felt a liitle down at first but put it down to my imagination, until I went to pick the front up at one stage, no chance! Strange, I thought, tried it again, this time even flicked the clutch, nope, that didn't work either. Next time I took off after stopping I did it in 1st, front lofted about 1 foot, if I had of given it that much normally in 2nd I'd have gravel rash on my ar$e, let alone 1st.
On top of all of this my fuel consumption went from a normal 19.5 km/lt down to 15.7km/lt, I can understand 1 or 2 km/lt at most, with the type of riding we were doing, but no way should it be 4.
So that was enough proof for me, no more caltex! ( or ampol or wollworths, pretty sure they use caltex aswell )
So maybe try your test again Jo, only this time using bp premium or ultimate.

Hey stranger!
We have always found great value with the Caltex unleaded. I really thoght the premium would be the same....

Buttttttttttt as a few of you have said that we should give it a few goes through, then we may see a difference...
well we'll give it another 2 fills in the next 2 weeks.
Will spend triple my fuel bill I bet! but will give it another 2 times which basically would be another 1700kms..... if there is no improvement after that many km's then it is back to unleaded!!!

Hey Perry was that you the other day on the KTM that snuck up beside me and a truck on my left side about 4.50pm on Beaudesert Rd? don't remember the day though.

Nah mate, wouldn't have been me, the only part of Beaudesert rd I've used in the last few weeks is the stretch between middle rd and Logan mwy, and then only around 12 midday or midnight.
Besides, I probably would've noticed your sticker and done something silly like pressing my face up against your passenger door window or pulling up your windscreen wiper before riding off whilst flicking up the birdy. LOL.
Like I said above, try doing your test using bp instead of caltex, think you'll find a difference.

Who knows whats in the underground tank at the servo, by the looks of some of the deadbeat delivery truck drivers with an IQ of 25 that I have seen there on occassion it wouldn't suprise me if diesel came out of the unleaded nozzle!

I have always found that through work people say that they get more km's out of it plus the power and i tend to agree with it.....do the maths yourself and see if its work while,cannt rely on those shows. It may seem that you are paying more but work out the milage.

Have also heard that too much premium can make the pistons too shiney and can be a bad result after a while but haven't seen this myself, Id maybe do 3 or 4 tanks of pulp to get it through the system and then do ulp for 1 and keep this up.....3 tanks then 1.....

alot of cars arent made for premium so remember that as well....

The extra cost for premium if it were effective for our vehicle is not a bother, but mileage wise, that is my point, on plain unleaded I got 180-200km per quarter tank, on the premium I got 71km on a quarter of a tank. That being the case I'd hate to know my total weekly fuel bill!

Remember the ECU takes a little while to re-program itself and adjust to the different octane rating. Simplisitically, the ECU has a knock sensor that retards the ignition when it detects pings. It take a few hundred K before the ECU adjusts back to default settings. As others have siad give it a longer go.

Another question, what is the compression ratio of the Pajero. I thinkt the old rules of thumb still apply even with ECU's. That is, if it's over 9.5 then you should be running at least 95 RON. I think vortex is 95 RON. I don't think it is 98 RON like BP or Shell. Somebody correct me if I am wrong. If the comress is in the 8's then probably no point with high octane fuel.

Alos remember Shell Optimax has a shelf life of a month. It used to be on the Shell website, but it has been removed. So only buy Optimax from a big garage selling a lot of it. I've been around club race cars where they were running off. We go and get a fresh batch of optimax and its running back on song

Jo, have a little Kompressor model which asks for PULP but lately has just has ULP and no ill effects at all. I was achieveing 6.5 litres/100 for most of the way home yesterday, right until I got to the hills whene the consumption went up. Best I have got over a trip with the PULP was about the same. Of course in the Nanny state we all obey the speed limit where we have to ;-)

I really did think a while ago I was getting results out of PULP but I really do wonder now.

Current fuel consumption update on using premium.
Since filling upon wednesday morning and having to top up twice since then.. current kilometres including 4wding today is 601km. Current cost of filling with premium unleaded and having to top up twice is $185.00. That is from wednesday to today, sunday. And that is not including the $30.00 it cost me to fill the jerry can which will have to go into the tank by tuesday..
so then total cost $215.00. for one week using premium unleaded and once estimating what more kilometres will be done before wednesday and adding it to current kilometres driven, approx 200km... so I'll have done 801km on premium unleaded with a total cost for one week only of $215.00....
that is ridiculous! that is a normal 1 weeks kilometres for me but costing me double!

Caltex Vortex/Premium, whatever they call it in your state, is rubbish!

Every time I use it economy goes out the window and there is a very noticeable difference in torque and engine rev-ability.

Shell Premium brings out the best in our cars. BP Ultimate makes the engine feel stronger down low, but top end seems to be the same as if it were on ULP.

However if your engine is not tuned/designed to run on premium, the only benefit you will notice is a cleaner running engine due to the detergents used. Remember higher octane burns slower and if the sparks is not strong enough or the compression is not great enough you will be wasting fuel.

In your case the 3L Pajero is not designed to be run on premium. However if it were the 3.5L it would require 95 octane.

Agree with your comments southy, but I wish to add, I had a 3.5lt Paj that never had a drop of ultimate or hi octane anything and it did the job fine for 170000km in two and a half years. So where it may be deemed "ideal" to use Hi octane, I personally don't believe it to be "necessary". I do not have tertiary qualifications on fuel analysis so I may stand to be corrected and maybe I just had a good run with my Paj???

Jo, save your bucks, buy unleaded and put a few more goodies on the truck. 6months of fuel savings (at your current scenarios) and you would have enough for a front air locker mmmmmmm.

Have found that running the Caltex Vortex 95 gave me approx 50-75k's more per tank in my Patrol then ULP. I found using the Vortex Premium gave me no extra.

With the 95RON being approx 5c/l more then ULP . . . it worked for me. I found paying 10c/l for PULP didn't provide enough benefit to keep doing it.

I found Optimax provided nothing extra for the cost , and I DID find BP excellent , but isn't available close by.

Caltex Vortex works for me.

I ummed and ahhed abount Perrys suggestion for BP, but when it comes to filling up each week I am not near any BP and with me finishing work at 4am I have to get straight home for mark to take the car for work at 5am, the closest to me is Caltex or Shell.
Mark said this morning after reading more input off you guys that he wants to forget the premium, and just stay with unleaded. The car is still running perfect so it can't be doing too much wrong to it.
