New tyres--National Code

Evening all,
Does anyone know what is happening with the supposed new national code regarding 4wd's.
I am considering fitting a set of larger dia(25+mm depending on tyre[255/70R16 or 265/70R16) tyres to our Terracan as the speedo is out around 7-8kph at 100 kph(actual 92-93kph, checked with 2 gps units)and this would bring the speedo back to roughly where it should be, plus give the jerry a bit more clearance, but I asked our insurance broker to see if we would still be insured and this came back

"We will insure these if they are within the specifications for that vehicle and the vehicle is designed for such tyres. They will also need to be compliant with the State or Territory Laws for that vehicle’."

I know in Qld at the moment you can only go up 15mm?, is this still the case or are we going to implement the new national code, which has a 50mm increase in tyre diameter. I don't want to go stupid with the tyre size but a bit of extra clearance and tyre longevity would be nice as we have only got just over 31,000k's and they will need to be replaced soon..

any assistance greatly appreciated

by the time any national code on vehicles sees the light of day we will all be using anti-gravity machines. if you wish to maintain your current insurance it appears the tyre requirement has been sorted for you. if you wish to go bigger then you may need to change insurance coys. there is no actual physical problem with putting bigger tyres on a terracan though you may have a clearance problem on lock on the inside front and also a problem with clearance of the suspension on the front - though if you change rims with a different offset that can be overcome as well. rgds

We are actually in the process of renewing our insurance now, so the better half said why don't you give our broker a call on Monday to see if someone else will insure our Terracan with the bigger tyres. We wait and see I suppose. As to the clearance on lock, the original tyres rub on the sway bar now, so a little more probably won't do any damage.

No comment on the tyre size, but with a gps speed indication, a gps works out speed as if you are travelling in a straight line on a level surface, a normal road is a few % of that spec so your error may be about 4-5 k. not 7-8k. hope this is of some use. Eric.

Understand Vic is implementing it but not sure about Qld. Nothing seems to be happening in NSW at the moment.
