OziExplorer Map Hint

Here is a little hint on how to make OziExplorer perform better when using the index , go to the C: drive and open the OziExplorer Folder, open the Index folder and delete the world map and the demo map then when using the directional arrows it goes direct to the required map without the prompt , you can also add the Simpson Desert maps in a named folder and the Great Desert Tracks maps in a named folder within the map folder and they all show in the red sectioned index map as a blue overlay and it works fine

Are you sure it performs better? How can it go to the required map when you may have 5 different types of maps available for the selected area?

Any map can be used as the index map, just specify it in the appropriate area (load new index map). You do not need to have the world map and demo maps as the default.

Any maps can be shown on the index map after selecting "sub-folders" on the index screen. I have all my maps split into their various types first (topo, road, aerials, etc) and then by scale.

sorry, din't mean to knock you.......

I have the Ozi3D, though i use it in conjunction with 1:12000 and 1:25000 aerial photographs and developing my own Digital Elevation Model with a 30m grid! Looks great :-) Unfortunately, i now tend to hit the 2,000,000 gridpoint limitation ;-)

If you have Ozi registered, then probably the only benefit you will gain from purchasing it is the lifting of the limitation of 100,000 points for the 3D grid. For example, using the free elevation data in conjuction with the free 1:250,000 topos from Geoscience Australia will allow me to produce a 3D model at the best setting of around 25km x 20km (500km2). Change the "Set 3D grid size in pixels" to the next highest resolution and you will have a 4 fold increase in coverage area due to the limitations. Obviously it depends of what Pixel Scale your digital maps are as to how the settings need to be massaged.

I would suggest that you download Ozi3D (trial version) and play with it, as there is a setting now under Ozi to download your elevation data automagically for free (good resolution for small scale maps, around 250m IIRC).

When I say perform better i don't mean faster or the like, I mean it does the task of finding the required map without prompting if you want the world map or the ie Lake Mackay SF5211 it goes direct unless I click on a section that is dual layered with the Simpson Desert or Great Desert Tracks maps , I had a funny feeling people would misunderstand what I am implying,

I agree with your map management system in that each mapset should be in a seperate sub-directory to reflect the benefit of set the map file path under configuration.

From the help file for setting the map file path:

Map File Path - the Folder where the map (.map) files are kept. OziExplorer will always look in this folder and its subfolders for maps, the preferred choice is to create a folder called MAPS under the OziExplorer folder. You could the create subfolders under the MAPS folder to separate your maps into various categories. Even though you can open a map file from any folder the map find function and moving map "find next map" will look in the Map File path folder as the default.
