That's the original design from South Africa. I have one....

The new design sold locally, with the steel mesh outer, is better. Also has a Pot Stand over the fire box which the original doesn't have.

Also the lid on this one is more tapered. The current Aussie one is squarer which allows slightly more room for your roast.

Don't expect to do too much frying on it. I find it's great for roasts etc that are cooked with the lid on but when the lid is taken off you loose all the heat. Plate doesn't get hot enough for frying. DON"T take the lid off too often when cooking or it will take forever.

Personally, if I was buying again I'd buy from the local supplier. That way you get some options to play with. For example, the fry pan they sell doesn't quite fit properly in mine..... :-( Fractionally different diameter.....

I bought it from the same ebay seller and can vouch for him.
Ended up paying $127 delivered.
I don't mind having the old version for that price.

Have made a few roasts and ribs with it.

I've been thinking about getting a Cobb. They are selling the stainless steel model at a camping store here in Townsville for about $229. Is this a good price?
Is there anyone around these parts who'd like to sell theirs?

$229 - only if you get the frying pan as well. We bought the Mark I and after I stupidly dropped the plastic base on the concrete floor of the shed I have upgraded to the stainless base for $50 from Cobb Australia.

We love it. It gets just as much use at home. Roast beef with only 8 heat beads.

!MPG:3!

Yum

My cobb was recently the victom of a garage fire, melted plastic all over it. Took it to cobb in cheltenham and was very well looked after, , polished up the main body, now has cool new mesh base and better than new. Been to NZ and back too.

Definitely only worth buying for offroad camping if it has the Stainless Mesh base....My experiences with the plastic base are well documented here Post 25324, and at Cobb...now that i have the steel base I couldn't be happier with it.

Pajman Pete, the base should only cost around $39 as a spare part , plus postage.
I bought my replacement base this year after seeing and studying it at the Cobb Stand at Rose Hill.

That sounds like the price, I remember paying around $50 including postage. I am thinking that tonight may be a Cobb night at home.

All this talk of cooking equipment in smaking me hungry!

We bought our Cobb second hand from the Trading Post but after it getting knocked a few times have now bought the stainless steel base. So hint for the day is that if you are buying a new one make sure you upgrade to the mesh base as definately worth it. We love our Cobb Cooker and use it for everything from heating dinners (two Jenny Craig meals will fit in one Cobb) up to cooking pizza, roasts and even if staying in a B&B and they dont have an oven we take it to have a roast.

Definately invest in one as best thing we ever bought.
