The service manager was very sure that the tensioner was the cause of our problems."
cant see meself how the tensioner would cause any, let alone all of those probs.
Even if it was seized solid it would be noisy as s..t and you'd hardly drag enough power out of the engine to cause a hugely obvious problem? Test the theory by driving a ZD30 and putting the brakes on while throttle flat to the floor, Id be suprised if you got a huge amount of black smoke out of an unmodified one?
What did the Service Manager say when the problem was still there?

Think that they though that I was making up the problem, as the patrol drove fine when they test drove it. The know there is a problem now, after I drove the patrol in yesterday blowing black smoke.
Think that they originally opened up the engine had a poke around and found a few thinks worn and decided to replace them.
When I told the manager that there was still a problem he said to bring the car back and they would have another look, "intermittent issues are very had to diagnose". Did not give me that much confidence, however I spoke directly with the mechanic yesterday and he seems a bit more switched on. I hope.

Well Fisho
I have been down this road, even told by one dealer ,I need new injectors,
Well I fixed it my self,
Diesel have a auto power stop, when the oil pressure drops as do most diesels, & if you oil pressure is dropping more than usual ,& if you do a lot of travailing on dirt roads & a lot of step hill climbing, you should change the engine oil & filters every 5000 Klms ,as the main oil spring to the oil filter slows the oil flow , as oil gets very thick & the engine stop cuts in slowly & you loss power ,I hope this is your problem as it is a easy fixed,it was mine ,Cleaned the sump the bottom was like tar & the intake to the main oil filter was just about closed
Best of Luck

Collin,
We only had the oil filter and oil replaced 3,000 km ago. We have had the EGR replaced and all seems good to date however, we have been only doing small trips around town. Need to take the Patrol for a good long trip this weekend to really test it.
Thanks for all the suggestions
