2002 3L Nissan Patrol power loss

Submitted: Monday, Oct 02, 2006 at 11:28

B and C

We have read on this web site about 2000 model Nissan Patrol troubles with the diesel pump. Has anyone has similar problems with the 2002 3L turbo Diesel ST.

We have had intermittent power loss combined with a lot of black smoke. We have taken it to Nissan Cairns and they replaced the fuel filter and air filter and then found that the fan and alternator belt tensioner needed replacing and why they had the engine apart found that the water pump was 95% dead so replaced that as well. The service manager was very sure that the tensioner was the cause of our problems. But we was not so lucky, the original problem is still there. As the power loss and black smoke is intermittent it is difficult to get the car to a mechanic when it is driving poorly.

Does anyone know what the problem may be. I want to be armed with as much information as possible before I take the patrol back to Nissan.

Your feed back is most welcome

Similar sounding to my parents 2002 3lt, Did the service centre do a fault code check? Mass Air flow senser?.....In my parents car it turned out to be as simple as two vacum hoses being reversed after the snorkle being fitted.
Probably just confused the matter for you but hope that helps

Patrol was playing up yesterday so got them to put it on the computer, it did not come up with any faults. Machanic does not think it is the air flow sensor, he is thinking the EGR valve!

your problem as stated is the air flow sensor.

Hi B & C,
My 04 3.0 TD was using more fuel than it should have and I took the advice of someone to try and clean the air flow sensor (bad move as I am a photographer not a mechanic), I lost all power and could not get the car over 70kph down the M2 here in Sydney, it cost me about $450 to replace the part that I had broken trying to clean it.
If its the air flow sensor the car will not want to rev and build up speed at all. My service Manager at my local dealer is good and sorts most things out for me.
Good luck, Ben.

cant see meself how the tensioner would cause any, let alone all of those probs.
Even if it was seized solid it would be noisy as s..t and you'd hardly drag enough power out of the engine to cause a hugely obvious problem? Test the theory by driving a ZD30 and putting the brakes on while throttle flat to the floor, Id be suprised if you got a huge amount of black smoke out of an unmodified one?

What did the Service Manager say when the problem was still there?

Think that they though that I was making up the problem, as the patrol drove fine when they test drove it. The know there is a problem now, after I drove the patrol in yesterday blowing black smoke.

Think that they originally opened up the engine had a poke around and found a few thinks worn and decided to replace them.

When I told the manager that there was still a problem he said to bring the car back and they would have another look, "intermittent issues are very had to diagnose". Did not give me that much confidence, however I spoke directly with the mechanic yesterday and he seems a bit more switched on. I hope.

Well Fisho
I have been down this road, even told by one dealer ,I need new injectors,
Well I fixed it my self,
Diesel have a auto power stop, when the oil pressure drops as do most diesels, & if you oil pressure is dropping more than usual ,& if you do a lot of travailing on dirt roads & a lot of step hill climbing, you should change the engine oil & filters every 5000 Klms ,as the main oil spring to the oil filter slows the oil flow , as oil gets very thick & the engine stop cuts in slowly & you loss power ,I hope this is your problem as it is a easy fixed,it was mine ,Cleaned the sump the bottom was like tar & the intake to the main oil filter was just about closed

Best of Luck
Colin

Collin,

We only had the oil filter and oil replaced 3,000 km ago. We have had the EGR replaced and all seems good to date however, we have been only doing small trips around town. Need to take the Patrol for a good long trip this weekend to really test it.

Thanks for all the suggestions

I had a similar problem with the lack of power, replaced the MAF sensor and it is all good. Cost for these should be about $220 from nissan and fitting it is really easy if you want to do it yourself. Just need some torx style screwdrivers and it will take you about 15mins!

My parents have got a 2002 3.0 patrol that they use to tow their 2.2 ton c/van and one prob they had ,with similar symptoms was a split intercooler tube.
It was a hairline split and only leaked some of the time, only under full throttle, which made it difficult to find whilst idling in a work shop.
Black smoke signals half-burnt diesel(either too much fuel OR not enough air) maybe worth a check!
gotta say I've never heard of a diesel blowing black smoke 'cos of a suspect water pump/fan belt tensioner, methink service manager clutching at straws!

Just read this post after arriving home from three week trip. A problem encountered with our 2002 model on the first day of the trip while towing a loaded trailer with all our gear was that four times in the space of a few hours the car lost all power, pushing down on the accelerator did nothing but then in a few seconds it rectified itself and off we kept going. In the process dropping only about 10 km/hr. Thought it may have been a fuel problem. It only happened while in the 110km/hr zones. The rest of the trip was done between 80 - 90 km/hr, without even a hiccup. Sounds like a common problem with 2002 models!
