Normanton to Borroloola

Has anyone done this run recently? I'm looking to do this as a shortcut on the way from Weipa to Broome in the first week of Nov. How much dirt is there and what's it like in general?

Thanks, Darryl

Darryl, I did the Western half of this road ( Borroloola to Doomagee) in August. It was all dirt and several years ago when I did the whole run it was dirt all the way. Suspect it still is.

The road I did was quite good, despite getting advice that it would be impossible to get through. There ware lots of wash out then as parts of the road hadn't been open long. Corrugations weren't too bad, but of course that could have changed, and will change again before Novemver.

In fact it was one of the better dirt roads of our entire trip, which included over 6,000KM of dirt.

Recently done it... From memory it is all dirt but the roads are great....
I rekon we cruised on an average of 80kmh...
Dont forget to take a big garbage bag,,,, the abo's absolutley litter the side of the roads with VB and Melb Bitter cans and you could almost offset the cost of the trip with the deposits..

Borisdog, I have done the Borraloola to Bourktown road several times in the last 5 years .it can be O K but it can also be an absolute shocker.Wollogorang Station Roadhouse and camping facilities have closed as they say the condition of the road has reduced traffic to an unprofitable level. We now travel via the 3 Ways / Mt Isa to get to Qld if we are towing the boat.I would check conditions with the Police at Borroloola etc before coming across unless you have a very robust vehicle etc. Have a good trip . Darryl,

I agree with John. I did the whole trip (in the other direction) and also the road to Roper Bar and Mataranka, not recently but last year in July.

Although we had quite good road conditions at that time of the year (almost all creek beds have been dry and corrugations not that bad except for the Roper Bar Road) I wouldn't regard it as a "short cut" as such. Especially at the time of the year you are talking about. It reckon it might even be impassable. You have 30ks of bitumen north of Normanton and the rest is dirt. Supplies are scarce. There is a quite big supermarket in Doomadgee, but it's bloody expensive. As John said Wollogorang is closed. I wouldn't expect much traffic. Two spare tires are almost mandatory. It's definitely a wonderful trip anyway, just not if you only want to save time. When we drove it, in general the road was better in Queensland than in the Territory. This might have changed completely. But one advise is to drive slowly over the grids in QLD!

good luck Wolf
