Melbourne To Beachport/Robe - which way

Submitted: Wednesday, Oct 04, 2006 at 17:36

Truckster (Vic)

Which way do/would you go? Planning to be West of City by 7am.

Hamilton seems the 1/2 way point... but to get there, Ballarat or Geelong way..

Ballarat - down to Skiptor - Bolac - Dunkeld - Hamilton
Geelong - Cressy - Lismore - Mortlake - Penshurst - Hamilton
-------------------
Then, is it worth dropping down thru Mt Gambier to Blue Lake? being hit or miss with weather
EG
Hamilton - Digby - Dartmoor - Mt Gambier
Hamilton - Coleraine - - Casterton- Mt Gambier
-------------------
Apparently this yr is not as booked as in previous yrs.. that would be sweet!!!

We followed the GO road to Mt Gambier then south to Carpenters Rocks where we got onto the beach. Mostly beach/dunes all the way to Robe from there...

We were in no hurry so we spent the night at Portland, the next in the dunes near carpenters rocks, the next 2 near Beachport then on to Robe, Barossa and came home inland. Couldn't tell you how long you could do it in if you were in a hurry.

Hamilton Route would be quicker. We left Robe at 9.30am Saturday morning and were in Bendigo at 5.30 with about 1.5 hours in stops for fuel food beer grog etc. Both vehicle towing campers. The Beach run was great but we took a few deviations along the coastal track which I reckon was more fun and interesting. Had to do a few recoveries and glad we had the long strap on board. Longest pull was about 40-50 mt.

cheers

Im working on the theory that everything will be earlier this year.. EG No winter, early summer etc...

Just a thought at this stage, phone call to the area day before leaving will also assist in mind making :)

Thanks for the tip anyway.

freeway to west side of ballarat up to hamilton then coleraine ,casterton, western side of casterton take the casterton / penola rd to penola at penola turn right go north just a little bit turn left into clay wells rd follow this thru and it brings you just short of robe
we found this to be the shortes/quickest way to robe and the roads were reasonable

steve

ps sometime soon i need your assistance i now have space allocated for a home page just need help to set it up

Rick (S.A.) replied:

Try the freeway to western side of Ballarat,(excellent use of time, easy driving) to Skipton, Hamilton, Penola, Robe.

Do the coast from Robe to Beachport then into Millicent, & return to Melb the way you came via Millicent, Penola etc;

OR onto Mt Gambier, Hamilton, Mortlake, Crsesy, Geelong, Melb.

OR if you are going all the way, Robe to Carpenters Rocks to Mt Gambier to Melb (as above)

So many choices, and so many pasties to eat while you are in God's own country (I think you say passties, while we say paRsties).

Cheers

Perhaps return could be Gambier - Port Mac Donnell - Nelson - Portland - Port Fairy - Warrnambool - Colac - Geelong.

Bit longer trip but lots to see, do. Look up Limestone Coast Tourism for a list
