Roller Draws

Submitted: Thursday, Nov 02, 2006 at 06:59

Jack

Good morning all,

I am in the process of setting up a new vehicle and will be putting in some roller _Affordable_Storage_Drawers.aspx. I can't decide on which brand, Black Widow or the Outback system. I want to get all the extras, ie, centre divide barrier and fridge roller ... The problem is, I can't get all the features I want from the one brand.

Can anyone provide any feedback either brand ?

I am surprised how little talk there has been on this one.

Thanks

Hi Jack
When one is going to outlay BIG DOLLARS for any draw system, you want to make sure that you are going to get the BEST VALUE that your money will buy. I upgraded just over 12 months ago from a very loved and well travelled homes made system to a BLACK WIDOW Draw System. The quality of the workmanship is A1 and I found that the features were better than the Outback system.

Small things like the tie downs for the Fridge Slides and neatly contoured, without having to screw them in place every time you want to secure something in the Back of your vehicle. Being able to remove the _Affordable_Storage_Drawers.aspx from you vehicle after a trip. The Outback are in place permanently, having to dismantle to remove them. With the BLACK WIDOW, simply pull in the two locking pins at the rear of the _Affordable_Storage_Drawers.aspx and the draw simply is removed.

These are just a couple of features, and I could write of many more.

I have no regrets at all and I feel that I made the BEST choice at the time.

Go for the Black Widow and you will be very happy indeed.

Regards

Stephen

Hi Jack,

You will find most people make their own or try to buy secondhand and modify to suit their needs and vehicle as to buy either of the above new is very expensive.

About 4 years ago a company called Red Desert had a sell out of their draw system for $300 each (cost of materials plus small margin) freighted to anywhere in Australia. They are almost identical to one of the brands listed above but were for a 100 Series. It was easy enough to make it fit our GU but it amazed a lot of people the actual cost to make a set of _Affordable_Storage_Drawers.aspx. As a result the couple of hundred sets they had were snapped up in a few days as word got around.

You haven't actually stated what features you are after but you will probably find that either of the 2 brands will probably accomodate any requests you have (within reason) to make some mods or additions. At the end of the day it comes down to how much you are prepared to spend.

Regards
David

Thanks for the reply, however, I have noticed your name associated with Black Widow product before. Can you disclose the nature of your relationship with them ?

Wouldn't be me. I would prefer to build my own than buy either new. So many better things to spend that much money on.

Hi Jack

I looked at a number of brands several years ago, including the 2 you mention. In the end went for a system by Fourby Fitouts - Melbourne based but can ship around Australia. What sold me was the ability and preparedness to customise without huge costs. the other plus is the ability to remove the entire system very easily and store it - we bought the Prado as an 8 seater and did not want to turn it into a 5 seater with a permanent cargo barrier and system. they also make very nifty use of the head room in the back which the others did not at the time.

I have no association with them - just a satisfied customer.

Good luck

Also have Fourby fitouts,
Excellent. Thing that I liked is it can be modular. You can take one drawer out and leave the other, Take both _Affordable_Storage_Drawers.aspx out and leave the fridge slide. Take the lot out and still have the rear floor protected, or remove everything back to standard in about 30-35 minutes. Very well made and plenty of advice also.
Use it for tools for work, and camping stuff for the trips. Very strong and does not rattle on the corrugations.

Black Widow for me. Better made than the Outback Systems and can easily be transferred to another vehicle just by changing the side bits to suit.

Black Widow do have the center divider/overhead rack setup and fridge slides so what else are you after?

MrBitchi,

I am considering the Black Widow with table (yeh - I know its not worth what they charge) and the high storage level above the centre divide barrier - but use Outback's 55 l water storage.

But apparently, blackwidow as a smaller internal dimensions in the _Affordable_Storage_Drawers.aspx than Outback ?

When I looked for mine for the Paj the dimensions were very similar. Went for Black Widow cause of superior finish and the removable wing feature.

Have a look at my rig pics for a shot of my home made divider and rack. I couldn't justify the $500 asking price for one so made my own. Cost about $50. It's only installed when we go on a trip and it works a treat.

I went the BW option after having home-made ones for years. Whilst the home made one's did the job, the issue of time to make them for the 105 was the major decider.

The comparison between the Outback and Black Widow is only very minor as far as I could see, but given the BW was more local to me than the Ouback, I felt as though it would be easier to do any followups/service/repair etc...

I had a small problem with the fitment of the BW system (major ARB dealer..!), which BW promply repaired PROPERLY themselves with no charge. I was able to wait whilst they did the repair and they even lent me a vehicle to nick into town and get some lunch etc..... the BW customer service was excellent. (No affiliations etc...just a satisfied customer). All now perfect and am very happy with decision.

Cheers,

Mark

Stephen L,

I was wondering if you have any affiliation with Black Widow, as I have seen you promoting there product else where.

Hi Jack,
I have no affiliation to Black Widow, even though I did deal direct with Mark Oliver, the owner of Black Widow Systems. The reason why I am full of praise is I feel they are a better product by far. After all, when one buys a product, it is pleasing to know that you have made the correct choice, with no regrets at all. Another reassuring point is if you change your vehicle, you do not have to go out and buy a complete new system, just the new side wings, as mentioned above.

If anyone ever asks the same question, I will gladly again advise on the Black Widow System.

Cheers
