To amuse myself today I asked the local Nissan dealer how much to install an electric brake controller in the X Trail. As I picked myself up off the floor he wanted to know what the problem was. Just that he wanted $650.00 to do it.
What is a reasonable price to have one installed. I got one fitted in the Triton when they did the dual battery for no extra cost for installation so whats reasonable.
or
Do I bite the bullet and do it myself keeping in mind that I'm a chippie and hate electrical things LOL
Cheers Kev

Do the instructions include where to place nails LOL
I just don't like wiring things that I don't really know much about but if I never try I'll never learn and if all else fails someone on this site will render assistance.
Cheers Kev

Sorry, I think I misled you. The $90 was install only as I already had the unit.
But sounds like $200 to supply and install isn't to bad I'm on the
Gold Coast so can't be of any help as to a good auto sparkydown your way.
Cheers Dave

If you buy a prodigy it comes with a DVD to tell you how to do it...
As has been said just follow the instructions, not difficult - even a pimply faced tosser could do it so as a chirpie Chippie you should have no worries....

Hayman Reese make one that can be mounted in any position, does not have a pendulum. Very easy to fit. You will have to run it through a continuos relay. Full instructions come with it. Geoff.

Don't go near a Hayman Reece! - they are the only one that are not pendulum operated and do not work anywhere near as
well as those that are. No proportional braking means no control over stopping.
Don't take my word for it - see the expert opinion at

My auto sparkie advised against rigging it up to second battery.
IF you totally bugger your aux battery with a fridge or something, van brakes no workies.
IF your starting battery dies and you have to put the aux for starting, van brakes no workies.
If your main battery no workies then car not going anywhere so van brakes don't matter.

Get a Prodigy and install it yourself. I did mine in the Jackaroo - The hardest part was figuring out which was the (cold) wire to cut near the brake switch due to the extra 2 wires for the Cruise control de-activation circuit.
Once identified, the rest was straightforward. I used bullet connectors on all 4 prodigy wires under the dash, so I can easily transfer the unit to another vehicle if required. Make sure you use a 20 or 25 amp auto reset circuit breaker on the battery feed wire. Also make sure to run the earth wire from the battery to the 7 pin plug, don't rely on chassis earth.
The prodigy works brilliantly, and works in reverse too.

I am just looking into controllers myself. Know what brakes to get already. Have been quoted $150 to fit. But if there is a DVD telling you how to do it step by step then i may have go at it myself. would make bush repairs a lot easier.

The biggest hassle is getting the extra wire from the unit to the rear of your vehicle. Sparky

Do you mean running the control wire from the unit to the trailer plug along the chassis rail?
I may invest in using works ramp to make it a bit easier if thats what you mean.

Hi Kev,
Get hold of Derek from ABR (site sponsor) he will sell you a new generation prodigy (nothing else comes close ) for a good price, mine was around 155 bucks I think.
Most auto leccies quoted $150 to install, ring around, you may get cheaper.
I did it myself, only 4 wires.
