Car Dealers- Trust Them?

Hi All,
I sold my HJ 60 (1986) about 4 months ago in a private sale. Although it had 500,000 km on the clock it was a good car with all the fruit. Regular service etc with anything needing fixing being fixed. My mechanic has a history of all work done on it over the 8 years.
Anyway in the local auto mag it appears in a dealers yard, so I contacted the dealer to get info. He advises that the previous owners were a kiwi couple who drove it around Australia and have now settled in Perth. -Not right I had it for 8 years and a young guy purchased it off me. How is the motor? good he says it has been rebuilt... No it hasn't .
How are the electrics ? real good he says.
I know that the young guy had problems with the vaccum pump behind the alternater and it appears that the alternator may have burnt out with the young guy driving it for sometime until it stopped through no power in batteries.( Didn't worry about warning lights!) He then tried to fix it himself and didn't disconnect the battery with the result being burnt wiring.
The young guy probably got $5K for it at the dealer whereas he paid $10k 4 months ago.
I guess it is very true that it is "buyer beware" when purchasing vehicles and don't believe a thing without checking with previous owners/mechanic.

Regards

Mark

Hi Mark.

Its the dealers that sell second hand vechicles only that are questionable!.

New car dealerships do have to keep some sort of reputation.( sort of ).

Cheers Axle.

You should see what they try when 2 females come looking (like when i took elder daughter shopping for a first car when my husband was overseas) - and subtly trying to find if there is Dad lurking somewhere to catch them out.

The next year when shopping for elder son's first (4wd), we got SGIO checks on the first few and passed them by. This was going to be expensive - so on the next 4wd where we were told it was perfect, my husband said - do you mind if we do a check? Then husband and son pulled on greasy overalls, got out tools and started the check the SGIO guy had done. The salesman rapidly came in with what was wrong with the clutch and anything else he thought these 'mechanics' were about to find. Another vehicle passed by.

I'm sure they are not all tarred with the same brush - just a few give them all the reputation of being sharks.

Trust + car dealer ??? in the same sentence ???? bloody hell you planning on giving us all a heart attack , physical impossibility to get 2 true words out of any of them being that their so called "job" is to extract the maximum $ for each and every vehicle ,, bought a jackaroo once ,with "books" one owner ,sold privately 2yrs later , saw in yard 2days later , advert stated "1 owner ,all books " was 4k dearer than we originally bought it for 2yrs previously with the kicker that the yard was the same as we had bought from originally. car salesmen/women couldnt lie straight in bed even with a 6ft piece of 4x2 strapped to their back.

ha, yeah. I had a Jack before my prado, the 2nd hand dealer I bought it from was one of the few people in life who can't utter a sentence or two without impressing total distrust! Not all like that of course, but geez this one was a ripper.

One time I thought it would be cool to be a car salesman. I sold new and used cars at a new car place. I lasted 3 weeks. The sales guys would walk in after being really nice to someone and swear about them. The thing is there is two sides to the story, see most people who walked in actually didnt tell the truth either, I dont know what it is but its as if telling the truth will get you a worse deal. I have spoken to sales guys both truthfully and also with a 'story' and if your honest I think it is probably better. Saying that the sales guys are mostly at fault and especially in used cars its cause they cant work anywhere else. Its a case of 99.99% of the shoddy used car guys ruin it for the rest.
