Elim Beach/Coloured sands - info needed.

I am taking the family north to FNQ for the winter and was hoping to get out to the Elim Beach/Coloured Sands area - north of Cooktown. I have contacted the local Information Agency and was told that access is now restricted. Has anyone been there recently or have any contact details for access permits. Also, what is the road into this area like. We are travelling in a raised Xtrail, fitted with larger BFG all terrain tyres.

I tried to get there in 2001, but the directions I was given by a 'local' in Hopevale got us lost.

Any information is appreciated.

This is the website for our trip July 2006 we went to Elim Beach on the way up and back! There are also track files for oziexporer if you use that!!

Thank you so much Steve. Your detailed site is amazing and I strongly recommend anyone heading north to have a read. I think I may have to print it out and do some 'studying' over night shift.
One question, what is the beach drive like to access the coloured sands area.

Although the photos, information, stories etc are a collaboration of all five families that went on this trip, I have to give the credit for the website to Ivan another member on this site!

As for access to the beach and the drive itself, at the time we went it was an easy drive but you have to be aware of the tides, you don't want to be caught out on the beach as the tides coming in!
