Easter - Close to Sydney - camping available

Submitted: Wednesday, Apr 02, 2003 at 20:09

Beddo

A new area has been opened up to the public in Yengo NP just north of Sydney - this place is called Big Yango. National Parks have a permit system operating - key access - deposit on key etc. Excellent trails to 4WD along, go mountain bike riding, walks (remote stuff), no swimming except in farm dams if you want, rainforest gullies, excellent views. Big Yango is an old cattle stud and has cleared valleys, numerous Hawkesbury sandstone ridges and a the prominant Mt Yengo (volcanic origin). The area has just opened and not many people know about it yet - bookings can be made at the National Parks office at Gosford on 02 43 204200. The place has a composting toilet at the camp ground and there is also a homestead that you can book out (to be ready for bookings soon). So if you are looking for a place away from the crowds this might be it, Cheers Beddo

Rohan, yes the area is right at the base of Mt Yengo, from Finchley Trig Lookout you head 500m west along the Finchley Track to the Yango Track junction, turn right heading towards the Putty Rd (Note: this track later turns into the Howes Valley track) and travel 14Km to a quarry & road junction - turn left this is the track into Big Yango - there will be a gate, so you will need to contact NPWS at Gosford to line up a key ($200 deposit - plus camping fees etc) - don't book at the last moment because NPWS have to post the key out or you can pick it up from the office. From the gate into the homeatead iut is 5 Km. There will be one campground with a composting loo for those that want facilities otherwise you can remote camp along the valleys.
Cheers Jeff (Beddo)
PS. property is an old cattle stud that was purchased by NPWS.

I know the spot - drove straight past it last weekend (there was no sign-post). I'm looking for somewhere to go in the second half of the school holidays, within a couple of hours of Sydney, but somewhere that won't be inundated with holiday makers. This sounds like it could be the goods (until "discovered").

ThanksBe good, or be quick.
