Hairy-Tanami Track

Hairy

I had a few beers with a couple of old stockmen off the Northern end of the Tanami around three years ago. Our talk soon turned to the history of the track.

One of these fellas took ownership and went into great detail about how he opened up the area as a stock route down to Alice Springs. He also mentioned a lot of names to support the story. Unfortunately, all my memory cells were destroyed when I awoke the next morning.

Apparently there's been a book produced detailing the history but I've been unable to find it.

Given that most authors are susceptible to Bush Bull Tish, do you know any old stock men I can talk to on my way through Alice this year? I'll also give Merve a call at Ruby Plains and see if there are any old records.

PS Which side of the road do guys drive on now? LOL

Regards

KIm

Those stockmen fellas son't get much fresh meat until the tourists come along. They're all the same, from those who run (what was once) landcruisers as battering rams at funny animals in the bush up north through to those around the Plenty("Yes mate, but what are you selling?")
Hearts of gold, the first to step up to the plate, but ooooh they tell a mean yarn at the drop of a hat.
Good luck in unravelling the truth from mythology. :)))))

If you are interested in history of that region a book called Angels Don't Go Droving (The Dick Scobie Story) by Jim Ditchfield published by the Central Queensland University Press ISBN 1 876780 33 9 is a good read. If you can't find a copy fax Jim on 08-8278-1944, he has copies for sale direct.
