I've just had a service on a petrol car of mine. The invoice says they used Magnatec oil

Question to those in the know is...I checked the oil level when I got home and found the oil to be a real brown honey colour, not a real clear honey colour like oils I know.

I was wondering if I been done over...anyone have experience with Magnatec oil?.

The filter was 'apparently' changed at the same time. The car was serviced at a major dealership.

Your thoughts?

Cheers

magnatec is a fantastic oil.
bought a brand new festiva a few years ago and always had a rattle at start in colder weather ford couldnt find /fault it changet to magnatec never rattled again.
now use it in our new little car
just remember its only about a 10/30 i think so should only be used on lowish k engines.

I was using it in my crapoladore until 120k and now gone back to it now at 120k and I havn't notice any excessive oil consumption. IU'll keep an eye on it and if consumption picks up then time for another oil!

From what I have been told about magnatec by poeple who know, its proper name should be honey oil, they say you cant make oil magnetic, I agree of course but my last post about magnets on this site I was proved wrong in that you can shield magentic fields to some degree. But in terms of magnetic oil I think its bull crap, honey oil on the other hand means that the stuff coats the engine all over, tops of cams etc untill next start. A good example of honey oil is penrite HPR diesel, no fancy buzz words but is the same stuff.

Castrol Magnatec 10W-40 has been my choice for about 5 years - costs somewhere between $25 and $32 for 5L, depending on specials and promotions - I use it in the diesel Jackaroo. Last time I looked this oil was a greenish, light honey colour - 2 possible causes for your comment come to mind - 1. Your engine does not fully drain when they pull the plug (common these days - down to system design) - that can leave a bit of old oil to mix with the new. 2. They didn't change the filter. If so, hope they didn't charge you for one - was a filter change due ?

Hi all,
Castrol magnatec was used in my Navara by a Nissan dealer and when a bad rattle occured in the engine Nissan blamed the oil and voided the warranty as this was not the correct oil that was ment to be used as per the manual.

They (Nissan) told me to take it up with the dealer as they (nissan) would not cover the issue "It's the dealers problem".

Dealer said &^^%^%$&^&*^%*&$&^%$^&*^%(*%*&$&^#^%&$#^%$#.

Traded Navara in on Hilux. Now it's the Toyotas dealers problem.

The spec for the oil is B3 which Maganatec meets. Why don't you tell Castrol that Nissan are rubbishing their oil?

The guy wearing the suit behind the service counter usually doesn't know what oil they use, so anything goes on the invoice. My vehicles haven't been back to a dealer for about 5 years, but back then, they could not tell me what type/grade/brand of oil they used.

If you want to find out whether the filter was changed, you need to put a scratch mark on it beforehand.

Big stealerships buy their oil in 44 gal drums and just use pretty much the one oil for all cars, so my mate that works as a service mananger for holden tells me.

Twabbit,
I also write on the filter, but thats just to remind me.
But Andrew wants to be sneaky here to see if they just polish the filter with a rag and not change it.

Yes "magnetic" is sales hype, they think that if they used the term "this oil has adhesive additives" that people would think that it would "stick" up the engine.
I've used it in the TD jackeroo when I could not get the semisynethetic stuff that your sposed to use...
Actually I think it was marginaly a better performer. We drove from Cairns to Canberra via Darwin towing the gin palace and when I got home there was no more discolouration than with the really expensive oil. Only problem in winter the TD Jack needs the 5 weight oil in Canberra to get the engine started.

Have always used magnatec in all my vehicles except the old lux (valvoline super diesel), in fact just changed oil and filter last night (prick of a job on the prado). Toyota at Blacktown also use magnatec. Never had an issue with it. Use to use mobil 1 synthetic in the old statesman but when we bought the commo new I put it in that and it rattled its arse off on start up, I then was informed not to use fully synthetic oil on any thing with roller rockers which the commo had so I changed the oil back to normal magnatec no more problems. Funny thing is HSV specify use of synthetic only in there motors yet they have roller rockers anyway go figure. Regards Steve M

I would say a darker honey colour, definately darker than say shell helix which i use to use years ago and darker than the vavoline super diesel. Regards Steve M
