I previously owned a 1997 2.8 litre turbo diesel. I liked it but I had a problem with it that I will warn you about.

When you service involves changing the coolant check that it is done correctly. There is a bleed valve on the top hose. This must be opened to ensure that the coolant is filled properly. If it is not filled up properly the result can be head problems. Don't trust your mechanic. Double check it yourself.

I was an idiot because I trusted a Nissan Dealer to do the 160,000 km service correctly. I am passing this on so you don't make the same mistake.

I had a Nissan Skyline. When you did a coolant change you had a bleed screw in the manifold and if you didn't bleed the cooling system you got an air lock in the head and a cooked/cracked head as a result. I gather this is what you got too!

yes i read that post a few weeks back and took notes on.
did a strip down today and looks like just a head gasket and at worst a milling on the block at worst.
compression good on all cylinders number six being the worst for wear but will chase that up before mid years trip.
thanks jim for the advice too!
there is obviously some issues to be resolved for an older car but for what i paid im still happy :)
cheers

Don't know the system in the Skyline. In the patrol the screw is in the top hose. Sound very similar.
