Brissie to Canberra

Hi,

I'm driving from Bris to Canberra over Easter and was planning on camping in a caravan park in Dubbo as a stop over point. Then I read the archives and the scary stories about Dubbo camping! It'll be just me and my 2 kids in a little tent, and we've camped all over without feeling worried. So after some advice on:

(a) safe places for us to camp in Dubbo
(b) alternatives

We're fine with rough camping, but I'm only taking the basics for the trip and a shower after a 10 hour drive would be nice :) Normally we avoid caravan parks like the plague!

Mate , one hears all the time about don't stop in Wilcannia, Bourke, Tennant Creek, Pt Augusta, and Dubbo, if you go to a good Caravan Park you won't have any worries, and remember the biggest thieving mongrels are where your heading, Canberra
The little Caravan just on the North side of the Bridge at Gilgandra is a nice park and it is about 63klm short of Dubbo., it has been there for years ,don't run around bare feet ....ouch oOOHH

Gilgandra Observatory
The Gilgandra Observatory and Display Centre is located in Willie St, just off the Newell Hwy. Aside from opportunities to view the rings of Saturn, sun spots, the moons and Great Red Spot of Jupiter, there are astronomical displays as well as rocks, fossils, petrified wood and native flora. The centre is usually open from 12.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m.on weekdays and from 7.00 p.m. to 10.00 p.m. every night but Sunday when it is closed. During daylight savings the nightly hours are 8.30 p.m. to 10.00 p.m and in the school holidays the observatory is open seven evenings a week, tel: (02) 6847 2646.

Hey Doug,
Canberra is not a bad place - it's the people that you lot send here for a few weeks each year that give it a bad name!!!!!

I'll second that not too bad a joint except for all the pollies that the rest of Oz sends here!!!!

Therefore please keep your thieving pollies in your own states, unlike most of the rest of Oz we don't need convict imports (think a couple hundred years ago) ((:

Thanks Doug. I lived in Dubbo for a summer many years ago and have stayed there since, but in a motel, not a tent. Gilgandra might be a nice alternative though, bit quieter and more "countrified: :) Oh and I think the Canberrians you refer to have already stripped me of an excess assets ;)

Turn off at Coonabarrabran and head for Mendooran where you can camp for free on the town common - from memory you have to drive past the police station to get to the common. has flush toilets and a (cold) shower, but plenty of space. If the highway is busy, after Gunnedah turn off at Mullaley and go in via Tambar Springs and Coolah - pleasant run.

Sorry only places we have stayed in Dubbo are motels, Cattlemans is great and have family units at reasonable prices.

Quickest way from Bris to Canberra is down the coast takes approx 12 to 13 hours straight stopping for fuel and food (kids and wife take comfort stops whilst obtaining fuel)

Agree with the turnoff to Mendooran - much better road, less hills than the highway and you come onto the highway just north of Dubbo. The camp area is just behind the police station. We have stayed here a few times and found it very good.
