We are currently into our second week of our 14 week trip around Australia with the five kids and was wondering what others have thought of the trip of Cairns to Broome - Where to stay and should I book now... It is not until the end of our trip in June but I have no idea of what it will be like.

In May/June join the Granny Grand Prix in Broome. In 1992 if you didnt book well ahead you could forget it. We bush camped for weeks.

Son is now in Broome, and spent several weeks in an onsite Van on a weekly basis at $350 week

Will be in Broome late April/early May with our rig, parked up in front of 2 bedroom unit near Cable beach rented by son at $300 week.

Hi LeahC,
We landed in Broome early September, we had no bookings anywhere along the way. We could not comment for June. We were at the tail end of the peak times we feel, as most destinations when we travelled most were on ther way back south.
As for the trip you will have a great time lots of things to see a do. We wished we had more time along the way. Oh well it just means we have to go back.

We have made plans for this but we have to complete our new project vehicle(Denning Landseer Coach conversion to Motorhome) first as we plan to make it a permanent lifestlye with our two wounderful children.

If you want a great place to go near Broome where you can camp for free, all you have to do is head up the Cape Leveque Track for about 20km then there will be a left turn - take that - it runs up the coast where you can find fresh water rivers / lime stone cliffs / Cable style beach but with no one on it and great fishing. If you want GPS pos, maps and pics etc my email is deancost@optusnet.com.au I am always up that way. ;-) Cheers

Good info below re free camping 20k out - but if you want to be in Broome - it will be crowded - you may not get into a caravan park - and they charge top dollar - but they have what they call "overflow" campsites - we stayed at one of these at the Pistol Club - on the road to the Broome wharf - really good place to camp - limited facilities - only 3 showers and toilets - but we never had a problem - spotlessly clean all the time - and very relaxed camping - saw where one of the overflows was - and it was around an oval - no trees -
The guys at the pistol club were great - apparently you can only stay in an overflow for one week though.
On the way across - on the Savannah Way - there is free camping at Rocky Creek - just past Atherton - huge area - then at Mt Surprise there are two campgrounds - we stayed at the one called Bedrock - really good camp.
At Croydon - every house in that town - and every powered site in campground - is connected to Austar - incredible.
South of Normanton - there is a farm stay
Do you have the Camps Australia book at all? Very handy -
Savannah Way is terrific - you can either do it off road or on the bitumen - remembering that developmental roads are only one lane wide - and if a truck is coming - move off the road - they don't move for you - they are their roads - watch out for flying stones when people move off the road and don't slow down - we had about 6 hits on the front window and completely smashed the rear window on our last big trip.
Enjoy - you will want to go again to see the things you missed first time round.
We are heading off in June to Quilpie, Yoway - etc etc - no set itinerary as yet
only for one month - wish we had more time.
