My first Land Cruiser experience.

Wayne-o

Spent my annual leave ine perth, down from karratha, and on thursday purchased a 5.5m ally funabout. weighing just on 1t inc trailer, i hired a LC 100, 07 model, 64000k on clock, NA diesel, to tow it the 1600km home. WELL.....hmmm, slow would be an understatement, but i didnt expect it no require it to be quick off the mark, but when it would only do 88-92kmph flatout....its long enough at 100! Then we hit the open road, and i had to stop and inspect the fuel tanks for large holes as the fuel guages were falling faster than the resale value of a falcon. Best economy i got out of the two tanks, which i think is around 150l combined was 490km.....maybe this is normal? but at $1.60 a litre in some places...the wallets a little lighter.
Cheers,
The Wayne-o

Mate that's not normal they may have wound the fuel back to stop renters blowing them up by thrashing them. They aren't the fastest thing on earth but they are normally better than that or no one would have bought one.

Very true, BUT, put a turbo on it, they will pull a mountain down.

I have a mate who owns a 100 and he put a turbo on it, the differance is amazing.

Still handles like a boat though, lol.

Certainly something not quite right with either the car or your story. A 1HZ 100 series would normally tow a 1 tonne boat at 120kph on the flat. A strong head wind normally knocks them down just below 100kph. When that motor 1st came out 17 years ago it was certainly seen as more than capable but with the addition of another 1/2 tonne on the 100 series & the improvement of the competition they are now particually dated. 28L per 100 (10mpg) is way below anything I've ever seen or heard of for this deisel. I would have been asking the hire company for a reduction in the fee for supplying you with a stuffed car.
Wayne let us know how your next hire Cruiser compares to the Nissan after the V8 diesel range is fitted accross the board ;-))

My point exactly. You compare your much later released GU3 iTD motor with a normally aspirated cruiser at the end of it's release & one that's been poorly maintained by the sounds of it too. By the end of the year the lowest spec diesel in the Cruiser range will be the 150 kw V8 & then Nissan will be in the same position with their base motor as Toyota are now. (Way behind)

mone when standard used to get 1000-1100km from both tanks and would sit on 120kph easy, then I put a turbo on ans 3inch exhaust etc etc on and I get 950-1000 out of both tanks and it goes a lot faster

Sorry for the late reply Wayne-o,

Mine gets about 950km's indicated on odo with 35's and 4 inch lift in the city, around 720km's with VERY heavy sand driving when out in the scrub. Definately something wrong with that one! Mine probably reads about 10% less than actual kays due to tyres, but has been tuned with intercooler, fuel aneroid and big exhaust.

Cheers,

Rossco.

Hi Wayne-o,
My LC100 is standard with skinny tyres. My boat is 18 ft fibreglass, 1.6 tonnes fully loaded on the tandem trailer. Sometimes when not paying attention to the speedo I find I am up to 120 kph without realising and I can go about 800 to 1000 kms without filling. Depends on roads, stop start traffic and how many short trips. It is slow to build up speed though.
