little rip offs

hey all. Have been holding this in, but the 2nd time in as many weeks this happened so I will post in.

Had my prado at the local Toyota shop a couple weeks ago for ANOTHER radiator leak, the 4th in 3mths. Go figure - but thats not the story. They found they needed a part from Sydney, so they ordered it and advised the total cost would be $173. So, next week took it in to get the work done.

Its a novated lease, so generally I don't need to see the invoices, but always do to see what they are billing for. So it comes this time at $273.

$273 I ask? Quoted $173 last week I say. Now get this, the Toyota bloke says, umm, we can't do anything about that now. Its too late.

ha bloody ha. Thats moronic. And told him not to be dumb, of course it can. So he goes off, putters around, verifies what I am saying with the original quote, and grundgingly changes it to $173.

The bastards try and sting you wherever they can.

The reason I posted this, as yesterday at a local small pinny parlour place, I put $2 in a machine and it didn't work, and asked the girl to make it work or just refund the $2. So she says, sorry, I can't do that. You have to just wait for it to get unstuck and play it.

ha bloody ha again. It wasn't real fair, a 16yo was no match.

If it makes you feel any better I got reverse ripped off today... Bought 3 new tyres for the camper @$179 each... Looked at the hand written invoice(computer down so couldn't do a fancy printed one) when I got home and he has written the following:

3 x 'XYZ' tyres, fitted & balanced @ $179ea.
Total: $507.00

You know, he even used a calculator to add it up...

When I was about 10yo or something, I worked with Werribee Lions at the country music thing at Werribee Park on a drink stand. Some arrogant lady once was c'mon c'mon, its this much and this is the change, c'mon. It just didn't add up to me but I got cowed and just gave the bleep to her. Worked it out later she ripped herself off. To this day I still remember laughing afterward.

So did you point out the error and hand over the $30.00?

The reason I ask, is that it appears that the majority of the posts on this forum talk about the business trying to rip off the the poor consumer with dishonest practices and such. (And I know a lot of it goes on.)

If he had of tried to charge $560.00 we all would have been accusing him of trying to "steal" $30.00, but if you said nothing and just walked out the door, what have you just done to him?

Now I'm not saying that you didn't bring it to his attention because I wasn't there, but from the "sound" of your post, it didn't appear so ...... hence my original question.

It is a 2 way street.

Cheers ...... Geoff

He read the reciept when he got home, now home could of been a half hour drive for all we know, would you have gone back and said that they made a mistake, and hand over the $30?

ImEasy ..... the answer is a resounding "YES", and if you find that hard to believe then I would venture to say that you probably wouldn't have.

Now let me ask you a question .......... If it had happened to you in reverse and you were shorted the $30.00, would you have called them and made some sort of arrangement to get your money back, or would you just say "it's too far to go, they can have it!"??

You see mate, I'm not trying to be high and mighty here, but if you don't take it back it's "theft" ..... plain and simple and no matter what type of spin anybody tries to put on it it's still theft.

Off my soapbox for the evening,
Geoff

Answer, NO, my mistake.

If id noticed they made the mistake whilst I was there at the shop, I would of told them, as ive done in the past, but if I found the mistake when I had arrived at home then I wouldnt go back, what goes around comes around, like many a time ive come home from buying something and it werent in the bag!

Off my soapbox for the evening.

I've got to admit you 2 are pretty good. In your minds you can justify anything but no matter what spin you put on it, in the end you are still thieves. Just glad I don't fall under the heading of "mate of yours".

Geoff,
I stand before the forum as a thief then...

I do however consider that if I had asked for 3 tyres but took 4 and only paid for 3, then I would be a thief... If a bloke in a managerial position (he did announce himself as the store manager when I rang) can't add up using a calculator, then I consider him to be a victim of his own stupidity...

Btw, received a printed invoice in the mail today, no mention of monies owed and a card offering a discount on my next purchase should I require a full set.

as per my original problem when posting this, between then and now, I have STILL lost a another full overflow tank of coolant, this will be the 5th time the same Toyota place wil be having a look to go fix. I'm going to take all the pent up rage and anst spent in this post and shoot it all at them in both barrels to ensure it is fixed fully and properly at all points in the coolant system this time. Oh yeah, at no cost to me either. Must be a thief as well
