The Greenest Car is an SUV!

Submitted: Tuesday, May 01, 2007 at 08:33

Robin

Got latest copy of our RACV magazine last night and they have an article about
what is really the worlds greenest car, based on total life cycle cost, not just running costs to the owner but to society as a whole.

I.E. An American study has included the cost of recycling the car as well and came
up with some amazing and controversial real world figures.

They found that recycling big lumps of iron like a Hummer is a lot
cheaper the your fancy hybrids like Prius which requires its batteries
to be returned to Japan at the end of its life.

The cost of recycling exotic materials and electronics is also high.

In the end the worlds true Greenest car is a Jeep Wrangler.

N0 1 Jeep Wrangler
.
NO 4 Toyota Corolla
.
.
No 63 Hummer H3
.
No 75 Toyota Hybrid (Prius)

(Note order above is ok - but not necessarily the values as my memory isn't that good.

Robin,

Even though you refer to an American study could you please refer to it as a 4WD and not an SUV.

why ? they are called SUV's here !!
A 4WD is a larger group of vehicles not necessarily being all SUV's ...
There is no other classification here in Australia and calling them all 4WD
is too generic .. there are 4WD Wagons, Trucks, Sedans, Buses, Buggies and so on.
So I think SUV is totally ok ...
have fun

This article makes interesting reading too, most of what they are saying would apply to any commercial vehicle/4wd.

I figured it wasn't any worse than a ten year old troopy but it actually uses less fuel (currently 15 - 15.5l/100 cruising loaded at 95 -100 kph) than lots of other 4wd's and is pretty well indestructable and can head out for an extended outback/desert trip under GVM even when fully loaded.
I've always kept vehicles for a relatively long while so was aware of the cost to the environment of new vehicles, in fact anything that is replaced frequently or wears out prematurely due to being not suitable for the intended job.
The Hummer/large pickup vs Prius argument has been going on for a while in the US.
I always have a bit of a laugh when people spend money to 'save' money as in buying the econo cars that you throw away after 5 years as they are no longer viable to repair, fitting lpg to vehicles that will take 4 -5 years to break even but dispose of the vehicle before any savings are realised. Another good one is the people that buy a 4wd, fit all the accessories, fancy fuel, oil and air filters, synthetic lubricants and then trade it in in a few years, a well preserved vehicle for the second and subsequent owners!
