Greydemon,
I thought that we were the only other Calzone lovers that go
camping but you have proved me wrong!
We love our weekly Calzone and during a 4 month trip around part of Oz last year we made a couple of them around the campfire.
Best success will be using a camp oven with a trivet in the bottom that is preheated with nice coals.
We use Pampas shortcrust pastry and make the Calzone so it ends up looking like a big cornish pasty.
You need to put coals on top of the camp oven after burying it in a nice bed of coals but it will need flipping over after maybe 20 minutes or so depending on the heat of the fire.
We've found it a labour intensive meal to make so maybe it's too much effort for most campers but we find the effort worthwhile when the Calzone is dished up with a nice sauce poured over it and sprinkled with parmesan cheese. The most important thing is to make sure you have a nice glass of red wine to go with the lovely meal in the true Italian way...
