Yeah, stopping in the emergency lane of any freeway is a very very dangerous and stupid thing to do. What can you do in that type of situation then? Well try and drive your vehicle as far off the edge of the carriageway as possible even if it means driving on a flat tyre. So what if you damage the tyre more or even the wheel rim, if it saves your life (and believe me lots of people have been killed when struck by passing vehicles when parked too close to the carriageway) then surely it was worth it. People sounding their horn when passing, if you were as close as you claim, then I don't blame them at all. You not only expose yourself to imminent danger but also every other motorist passing by. I hope that you've still got a headache to remind you of your stupidity.
What could you have done better. The obvious, move your vehicle away from the 'danger zone' (close to carriageway), call for assistance from RACV, NRMA even Police as if any of them attend, at least they have warning lights etc. If you didn't, perhaps you could have put out a couple of warning triangles or at least a row of 3 - 4 cones conspicuously placed to warn oncoming motorists. Didn't have any, well now might be a good time to get some, don't you think! That's what it's all about, warning the oncoming traffic as to the potential or presence of a
hazard. No guarantees but I bet it would have provided you with a safer environment. If none of these were available to you, the best thing would have been to remove yourself and onyone else well away off the side of the road and await help. On a freeway it's bound to be only a matter of time before someone notifies the authorites.
To some extent, your problem was caused by your indifference to the probable state of roadworthiness of your vehicle if as you stated 'you got another couple of hundred k's out of the tyre' then it seems to me that the tyre had well and truly reached the end of it's serviceable life. You made a very poor decision as a driver, didn't you.
So after all your carry on about other drivers etc, I believe that you are the one that deserves a good swift kick up the kyber pass, perhaps it might serve to remind you that next time you should use some common sense and think of others who might also happen to be using the road. That's not too difficult is it, after all you did by some fluke manage to survive to tell us of your 'adventure'. More importantly, have you learnt anything from it? I hope so.

Yes the driver admits to pushing his luck with that particular tyre BUT it could happen to a NEW tyre, anywhere.
What DIO(and he sounds like a cop) purports, is that in every situation you have to make exactly the right decision and you HAVE to drive away from an Emergency Lane on a flat tyre busted tyre, probably skewering the road surface with the rim and stuffing up more parts of the vehicle just because it is politically correct.
In REAL life this ain't so. What the hell is an emergency lane for anyway?
We all make mistakes(except DIO, of course...lol) and relating the story here highlights what one may have done in hindsight.
Cheers
