Hi all, just a quick note regarding the story on compact caravans, or more specifically the comment that TEARDROP CARAVANS are new to Australia.

Teardrops were marketed here during the 1930's, 40's and 50's quite extensively and many original units are either being used actively or are under restoration.

I have a 1939 Sportsman teardrop which I am about to take on a trip from Melbourne to Darwin and return being towed behind a 1953 Vauxhall Vagabond.
I am travelling with a group of about 50 Vauxhalls and Bedfords from 1933 to 1980.

More information on teardrops or Vintage (pre 1970) caravans can be seen at vintagecaravans.com or contact me at Griffinvale@hotmail.com

cheers to all,

Leigh.

This looks to be someone using this site for a free advertising opportunity.

This has been occuring a lot lately on other forums from computer gear, mbile phoes to how to rent out your RV. It was relieving to see those posts were removed by the moderators when they discovered what was going on.

All for developing enterprises but I'm not sure if this is an appropraite place for "door-to-door" sales.

No doubt other forum members will support teardrop's strategy of using a forum that is provided for unqualified advice, feedback and anecdotes on enjoying the great aussie outdoors, not a salesyard.

pull your head in !

>All for developing enterprises but I'm not sure if this is an appropriate place for "door-to-door" sales.

cough cough BS! both parts. You're actively discouraging enterprise development ant there are no "doors" here, stop making out what it is not. You know ... exaggerating!

I for one appreciate the view and am opposed to you trying to limit that. This is the internet in the 21st century!

Let me make my own choices.

Wizard,
What crap, what have you been drinking or perhaps smoking?

Can you please explain to me what Leigh is trying to develop or sell?

I know that I am getting on a bit in years, but I'm stuffed if I can find anything in his post.

All he was doing was advising that the original piece was incorrect and offering a correction, letting people know that tear drop caravans are not a new invention.

Further, Leigh mentioned that he and a group of like minded people were driving older cars and caravans to Darwin.
(No devlopment or sales there).

He also offerred, in case anyone on the forum was interested, a website relating to vintage caravans and a contact name and address albeit an email address for anyone who may want to find out a bit more.
(Again no development or sales).

Make sure your brain is in gear before you post or reply next time.

Disco.

Hello Wizard1, thanks for your quick reply. This comment was certainly not put on here as a "free advertising opportunity" I feel the article stating that Teardrop caravans are NEW to Australia is very misleading and I am only trying to set the record straight about the history of Teardrop caravans in Australia.

If this site is here for the benefit of caravan owners and their love of touring this great land then I feel any information posted should at least be accurate.

I am not sure which part of my post is advertising. I mentioned the trip we are doing as I thought it may be of interest to your members, I am sure we shall be seen out and about on our trip by many of them.
If it was about the reference to the Vintage caravan site I only thought if anyone does want to know more about Teardrops or old vans then that is probably the best place to start. I could mention lots more if I wanted to.

Sorry if I have done the wrong thing, but it wasn't me who published the article with the wrong information in it in the first place!

cheers to all, Leigh.

Leigh,

I would suggest that you take up your comments with the Content Administrator - Damian and use the article feedback system. The forum is not the place for this type of comment, in fact the article was written with input from the manufacture (I believe - Damian knows exactly).

Additionally I take a dim view on criticism when you make NO attempt to content the publisher before expressing your views and posting links to your site. I may be precious on this point however the current series of caravan articles has been written with mostly manufacture input and we have a feedback system installed within the article section (in fact it links to the forum anyway) so why not use it.

Hi all,

Leigh, as the writer of the Compact Caravan article, you are correct when saying that the teardrop caravan is not new to Australia. I did know that it was very popular in the US in those times and should have researched a bit further to see if it was also popular in Australia then. Thanks for highlighting this information to us Leigh and I have now amended the article.

Have a safe and lovely trip.

I did not know '50 Vauxhalls and Bedfords from 1933 to 1980' were 4WD, learn something every day lol.

Since when did ExplorOz become an exclusive 4WD site.

To quote from the "About Us" page;

"Officially launched in 2000, ExplorOz was the first Australian website to understand and devote its content to the needs of the traveller wanting to know how to prepare for a driving adventure in regional and outback Australia with their 4WD, camper trailer or caravan."

I would think a Vauxhall towing a teardrop caravan would meet the criterea.

Cuffs,
What an irelevant piece of sarky crap you wrote!

Does it really matter what vehicle he was driving?

Leigh was offering information that may be of interest to some readers on this forum... and that was ALL.

It is the moderators right to decide what or who contributes to the forum, let's leave it that way.

Sorry cuffs, It appears I'm completely at a loss as far as this group is concerned. I thought it was for people who wished to travel Aus and find information. Apparently it is only for people with 4WD's.
The fact that I am towing a caravan from Melbourne to Darwin via Port Augusta, Marree, Oodnadatta, Coober Pedy, Alice Springs and surrounds etc does not count if I am not using my 80 series Landcruiser! What a crock.

Sorry to have inconvenienced you all. Gee, what a friendly group. (NOT)
Thanks for your reply Grinner, if I ever meet you its my shout.

GOODBYE,
leigh.

Mate
You're probably more adventurous than some of the people on this forum- with the latest and greatest in 4wds, with every option & accessory available.
Some of them wouldn't know how to get to Maree or Oodnadatta- and they probably wouldn't venture that far coz they might get the vehicle dirty.
Stick with it Leigh- enjoy your trip, and if I see you out there I'LL give you a wave.

Hi Leigh

Thanks for the info

This is not a a predominant 4wd site at all. It is open to everyone. It is all about travelling Australia.

Don't take any notice of the negatives on this site. They are everywhere in our society.

Tear drops are becoming in vogue again and are towed behind a number of 4wd's

Cheers

Hi Leigh
It should be a fantastic trip. I have to admit that I'm glad I'm not travelling behind your convoy ,lol !! It would be a great sight though. Because of the retro styling of the teardrops, I guessed they had been around before, but hadn't really thought about it. Always nice to learn something. Good luck and enjoy the trip.

Hello Leigh,

Enjoy the trip m8.
It's shame I'm a little too far away to have a look-see.
I'm sure there a plenty of people who get a thrill out of seeing your convoy.
We have an Avan these days but I've seen photos of similar fold-away campers from the 40's or 50's too.

Good luck to all.
