Yeah thanks Steve that was my first thought, but we'd travelled about 80 km since the "depth test" and it was 2 days later as well. Only been home a while, too cold to have a look underneath, presumably the sensor is on the side of the auto somewhere. Cheers, Dave.

If you do find it is the speed sensor, try the wreckers first as it should be about $30-40. Toyota will want $300-400+

Had the exact same symptoms on my 80 series manual. Did it for a day or two and then came good for a couple of months, then did the same flickering and then dead.

There may be other cars that the sensor will suit as well, I think the 80 series shared it with certain Celica's and others for example. The list of suitable cars comes up on the parts catalogue at the Toyota dealer. The sensor I got in the end from the wrecker had a different part number to the original one I pulled off, but works well. Speed checks ok with the GPS anyway.
