Intermittent speedo reading, 04 Prado TD

Submitted: Sunday, Jul 01, 2007 at 21:50

Prado Dave

Out driving around Straddie today, and noticed the speedo needle was slowly moving between 0 & 40 while travelling at constant 40. The needle then dropped to 0. A bit later (after the kids showed me where Mum had driven the trailer through some deepish water - looking for a campsite she said!!) needle was back up again, seems to be OK since. Any bright ideas? Thanks, Dave.

I would say possibly Dave you got a bit of water in the speedo sender unit terminals and then dried itself out ?? Just a guess Regards Steve M

Yeah thanks Steve that was my first thought, but we'd travelled about 80 km since the "depth test" and it was 2 days later as well. Only been home a while, too cold to have a look underneath, presumably the sensor is on the side of the auto somewhere. Cheers, Dave.

Hi Dave

The connector is protected by a small O-ring type seal, which may have allowed a little water to seep in. The the famous Toyota electrical gremlins were able to wreak havoc in the connector until it finally dried out. The O-ring seal would have kept the water in once it got in.

Dave,

If you do find it is the speed sensor, try the wreckers first as it should be about $30-40. Toyota will want $300-400+

Had the exact same symptoms on my 80 series manual. Did it for a day or two and then came good for a couple of months, then did the same flickering and then dead.

There may be other cars that the sensor will suit as well, I think the 80 series shared it with certain Celica's and others for example. The list of suitable cars comes up on the parts catalogue at the Toyota dealer. The sensor I got in the end from the wrecker had a different part number to the original one I pulled off, but works well. Speed checks ok with the GPS anyway.

Hope you track it down, annoying isn't it?

Wazza.
