Old bush days

I've always had a passion for old bush poetry and yarns. Had a bit of time today to think about a very long life, and some of the experinces in the bush. Here's a bit of a fractured discourse of my early life in the bush through poetry.

"Had an evil missus once, by golly. Complained about the possum pickin'
an every other thing to boot.

Told her she was a top cook, an off to the sheds we went.

The Ringer was greasy I'd be saying, an with attitude to butt'

Stew was the lot, but not for the Ringer.

Trouble was brewing, so I shot the bloodly cook".

Regards

Kim

Kim,

You're a braver man than me. I've got no feel for poetry whatsoever.

Yeah, I did see mention of you becoming one of the 'great unwashed' on here. Welcome aboard. That does'nt mean we'll show any compassion in regards to these 'poetry fits' you're having LOL

ps See, I even resisted the obvious quip 'You should have taken more notice of the dog's proof reading skils' Hahahahahahahaha

Because I've grown up with horse racing and riding I have a love of Banjo Paterson and Adam Lindsay Gordon's horse racing poems

Banjo Paterson's- Pardon The Son of Reprieve is my favourite - its a very long poem but it ends like this...

He won it, and ran it much faster
Than even the first I believe
Oh, he was the daddy, the master
Was Pardon, the son of Reprieve.
He showed 'em the method of travel
The boy sat as still as a stone
They never could see him for gravel
He came in hard held and alone

"But he's old and his eyes are grown hollow;
like me, with my thatch of the snow;
When he dies, then I hope I may follow,
And go where the racehorses go.
I don't want no harping nor singing-
Such things with my style don't agree
Where the hoofs of the horses are ringing
There's music sufficient for me.

And surely the thoroughbred horses
Will rise up again and begin
Fresh races on far-away courses
And p'raps they might let me slip in
It would look rather well the race card on
'mongst Cherubs and Seraphs and things
'Angel Harrison's black gelding Pardon,
Blue halo, white body and wings

And if they have racing hereafter
And who is to say they will not?
When the cheers and the shouting and laughter
Proclaim that the battle grows hot
As they come down the racecourse a steering
He'll rush to the front I believe
And you'll hear the great multitude cheering
For Pardon the son of Reprieve

I may be justifying my pockets of chaos, but I will always choose people over perfection and the heart over task and tidy.

Good one I saw in a bog in London went something like,
On a cold and frosty morning I looked out my window sill and saw a sparrow looking lost and full of dread ,
so I closed the window slowly,
and crushed it's f####'n head,
sorry just tickled my sick sense of humour..........

Talking of poetry - we've just been touring outback QLD and came across the phenomenon of modern day bush poets - lots of them working the tourists haunts in the outback it seems. We came across Milton Taylor in Winton at the caravan park - nightly show - hour and a half flat out - a dead set showman - won awards here and overseas apparently - rattles off a lot of animated entertaining stuff all from memory.... very impressive...... I've got the collected works of Lawson and Paterson here - about time I read them !
