Got back from Fraser last Saturday. Up to that time still able to drive around Hook Point provided you had the right tides, was a bit narrow in places so low tide was the go. The closure is supposed to be coming soon. The inland track has 3 exit points from memory so you dont have to go all the way to Dilli Village when the closure does happen.
The beach from Leisha Track Double Island to Rainbow very narrow only driveable at the Leisha Track area on low tide so would suggest giving it a miss.
Fees for the barges have gone up since last visit $135 return with trailer on Mantaray.

This article reports that the beach access will be closed in a matter of weeks.

It makes me wonder if the first 18km of beach is closed for 4wd access, and they will allow beach camping, does that mean access to the camp sites will only be from the inland track?

So more new tracks will now be required leading to the back of the beach camp sites?
More vegetation disturbed, and more tracks to maintain, instead of letting the surf do the maintenance. :o)

The most ridiculous part is the statement by the minister in question that the road is safe because there only 4 of the 107 accidents occured on that track in the last couple of years. What she fails to realise is that very very few people use that track. It is only used at High Tide by people who couldn't wait for low. I go up a couple of times every year including the comp and everyone I know goes at low ide to avoid that track & eli creek. I reckon it would be fair to say that less than 1% of people use that track if they have a choice. So if 4% of the accidents happen on a track used by 1% of the people .... making everyone use it is a death sentance waiting to happen.

To further analyse those figures you should probably take out the accidents caused by idiotic backpackers tipping over their high top cruisers while doing donuts or similar... conservatively this number could be at least half. So you'd be left with 4 out of 50 accidents caused in normal driving situations, so say 8% are caused on this rarely used track. Put the same inexperienced backpackers on it while speeding over at times corragated gravel & stopping suddenly because they don't see the bypass track back to the beach till they pass it and its gonna be a deathtrap!

This is the comment I made to this article.

"Another typical knee jerk reaction by this gov't. Why is it that the minority groups have so much power. Why are so many places getting closed. When these places are closed the forest takes over and the tracks become undrivable. Great you greenies say, but how the bloody hell do you put the fire out in the middle of a forest without any roads or tracks. It's only because of these tracks that you can put some of the fires out. We could just let it all burn.
As for camping down the bottom end of Fraser Island, I have never seen a single person camp down there. Because you can't.
Something else some of you people might want to consider is that if you want the island shut down be prepared to go over on a bus as this will be the only way to get there as the owners of the resorts on the island want it to themselves.

As for yobbo's, unfortunately you get them everywhere. And not just in for wheel drives. They come in all shapes and sizes.
If they are so concerned about speeding then drop the speed limit and actually have police enforce it, because in ten years I have never seen a police officer down the bottom end. Why would you want to speed, you are there for a holiday and to enjoy the scenery.
The really sad thing with all the negative comments about 4wd's and driving on the beach and 4wding some of the greatest treks in this country is that 99.9% of these are coming from people who have never been 4wding. It's a real shame because there is so much out there to see apart from the concrete jungle that they live and work in and make their uninformed decisions from.

Unfortunately while Labour is in there will always be these closures. Wait untill Mr Rudd gets the top job, we ain't seen nothin yet. Especially with Peter Garrett screaming in his ear.
