Pedders Suspension

Hi all Mate at work has just bought 120 series prado 04 model V6. He wants to lift it roughly 2 inches and put firmer springs for a load will not be towing anything with it. Now my choice is OME or Bilstein, he wants to go pedders as his mate works there and he can get it cheaper. Just wondering what your opinion is on there stuff for a 4wd. I had it fitted to my commodore and never had any issues but we are talking two totally different vehicles and obviously with a two inch the opposite way my commodore was not intended to go off road. Hes not intending to go to the cape or any heavy duty stuff but he is intending to go off road. He is only new to the scene. I will print the answers up for him to see the good and bad answers and take back into work tommorrow. Regards steve M

My only experience with peddars was on sedans( full sports kit on an ED falcon) . I have also had lovells on sedans and 4wds and I found the lovells were better springs.
If your mate can afford it King springs and bilsteins are supposed to be excellent. Hows the prado going?

There's one on ebay that finishes tonight only upto $300 ($1600 new)for an alloy. Would prefer the steel one but a few people I have spoken to reckon the steel is too heavy on the front of the prado's so off I went to ARB to ask them the question and they told me only about 15/20kg difference in weight, then spoke to a bloke who fits them up and he said Bullsh#t the steel ones are heaps heavier mmmm. I know the one on the old lux was pretty solid but never had it wright off to feel the weight difference so can only go by what people tell me. I have heard the alloys crack easier and are virtually impossible to repair if you crack it. So it looks like an alloy as the springs getting fitted to the front will handle an alloy ok but if I wanted steel I would have to upgrade to the heavier springs. How you going yourself ?? You are right about the price of bullbars. I discounted a very low (82000ks) km jack because it had no bbar or tbat. By the time i brought these plus tyres I was looking at three grand. If you wack a big roo with and alloy it may be a write off, but I reckon the steel bars are to heavy for ifs . I did have an arb steel bar on the 4runner. Sold it a coulpe weeks ago, fellow spotted in the street and took it straight away. bit sad to see it go but at least a oldie brought it.
All I have done to the Jack is get my driving lights hooked up and get the exhaust restrictors removed plus change all oils etc.

When I was "shopping" for a suspension upgrade for my 120, Pedders was one of the companies that I contacted (in person) and was less than impressed. I wanted specific spring rates for a 40 mm lift and they couldn't even tell me what their spring rates were!

OME (ARB) came to the party with rear springs that were spot on and front ones that were only 6 lb/in heavy. Most of the others that I contacted wanted to know what I wanted spring rates for! Stay away from Pedders if you're serious about your suspension. They might be good for rally cars and such but they've got to go aways in my opinion for 4WD's.

Thanks Geoff, reply appreciated. I must admit I know jack sh#t about spring rates etc. I am having OME fitted to mine this week. I have used them before so will stick with them. I think obviously like all of us he's trying to save a few $$$ as he is getting mates rates but in the long run I think he will be better off with either brand (ome, bilstein,kings). Regards Steve M

My brother had Pedders on his MQ Patrol (leaf springs and shocks) and thought they were OK. Then he broke a spring in a wombat hole (that's another story!!) and replaced the shockies with Old Man Emu. Now he says the Pedders were complete cr#p, as the OME is heaps better. Gives my 80 series a run for its money over the rough stuff.

Can't comment on quality of their coil springs, but would not consider the shockies.

My old man fitted Pedders for his cape trip and it performed great, I have driven his Patrol with it v's my Patrol with my gear and found it to be good gear. A bit pricey for me but if he can get it cheap I'd say go for it. Both Mine and my fathers are 2" lifts

I think with the couple of replys refering to the pedders not been that bad I think due to him saving some $$ he will go towards the pedders. As said he doesnt intend doing cape or major rutted roads so dont think he will have any issues using either of the brands. I have had Pedders 41mm foam shocks and springs on my Cruisers since Oct 02 and haven't had any problems. They gave me a 50mm lift and were better priced than some of the others on the market.

Its like every thing in life a lot comes down to who you do business with, rather tahn just the product and if your mate knows someone there then if he has any issues then he should be looked after.

Opinions are like ar seholes we all have one!! My experience in a 1900kg Isuzu MU (Rodeo). IFS front and leave spring rear

I had Trackrider front Torsion bars, rear leaves and Trackrider shocks all round. $1900 all up!!! So not cheap!

Fitted them in Brisbane and drove from there to Sydney...back to Brissy and then out to Alice. Did the Mereenie loop to Kings and then to Uluru and blew a front shock in the process. Wasnt interested in driving back to Alice to get it replaced under warranty so put up with it till Adelaide.

Think I had done about 5-7000 km and were still in warranty but they were only going to replace the blown shockie!!!

Not happy and after much insistance they 'agreed' to wear the cost themselves of the other shock! They MUST be replaced in pairs.

The origional ISUZU shocks did 150 000km and the ride was not terrible when I removed them so 5-7000 km out of heavy duty offroad shocks from Pedders....didnt leave me very confident in the product in the long term.

probably too late with this reply but I give my two cents worth anyway. About 18 mths ago I got pedders springs front only on my 05 Prado grande.

I booked it in for the 50mm lift, a couple of hours later they rang me to say the lift is actually only about 30mm, and if I not happy with that I could try 80mm lift and by assumptions should give a 60mm actual lift. Which I did and they were right. So with some settling should be a true 50mm lift.

My Prado has dual batteries, sovereign bullbar, spotties and superwinch up front.

Can't fault my suspension set up.
