This was taken from the Caravaners site,
I hope the Author does not mind.
It certainly is food for thought

On tonight's TV news there was a story about the closure of 18km of beach on the southern end of Fraser Island to four-wheel-drives within weeks.

For those interested, you can read it .

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

and if we do nothing about the idiots using the beach as a race track there will be more beaches closed for driving. I'm not surprised at all.

On reflection I have no idea how anyone will actually enjoy this part of the island unless they walk in. This is pretty rough piece of beach anyway that would hardly have swags of families sitting on it. Makes no sense to me but I've been wrong before.

Kind regards

In all the years I've been going to Fraser I've NEVER seen anyone camping on that stretch of beach.

Closing the beach means they'll have to upgrade the inland road. Upgrading the inland road will be excellent news for the commercial tour operators, will mean they can use the road to access the southern end of the island and the Inskip ferries at any state of tide. Stated aim of the commercial operators/greenies is to ban all access to the island by 4WD except for the commercial operators.....

Does any one else smell a rat????

Yep, but don't forget this is all in the spirit of safety. We are saving lives here so there is no limit to the expense we'll need to go to upgrade that road. I caught a hint of some accident stats for the island being quoted but I missed the stats on the speeding fines issued by the permanently based island police. I suppose there must have been a lot on that stretch of the beach?

I've just come back from the EPA in brisbane and they tell me that the beach will be closed in the next couple of weeks, probably just after the schools hols so they can re-grade the track from all the holidaymakers. I was also told (by the girl behind the counter) that was 'very good' with speeds up to 60km/hr. I have never travelled on the low-tide track, but I've heard how bad it is - maybe it won't be that bad after all, I guess only time will tell.

I agree, nobody camps on this section, from memory it is signed no camping. Also if the place is closed to vehicles, how do the bloody families get there? And finally, how does driving on a man-made road help the environment when travellers could be using a beach that regenerates with high tide?

No, every excuse they make is rubbish. So what is their hidden agenda? They have to have one - it's the Beattie Government.
