I was lucky enough to be there a year or two ago - drove out from Vancouver, through the Rockies. Loved it (though there are a hell of a lot of gonads in goosenecks driving at 75km/h, with few overtaking opportunities).
The stampede is (as you're possibly aware) a bit like a big royal show here, though the whole town gets in on the act (at a rough guess, Calgary would be of similar size to
Adelaide) - everyone getting about in cowboy hats & tassles. Though I never could quite come to terms with denim skirts + cowboy boots. Maybe you could explain that to me when you get back!
Plenty to see at the rodeo, and they run virtually every event each day, so you don't spend all day watching bulls or horses.
There's one event, the name of which escapes me at the moment but which could possibly be called the "Thelwell introduction to rodeo". It starts with little kids on ponies, and ends with little kids being dragged around the stadium by steers. Very entertaining.
Have an awesome trip!
