Article Overview - Winches
All travellers should be capable and equipped for winching so in this article we will discuss the various winching methods and equipment on the market. View Full Article...
I read the post about winches and lokka's and it was mentioned that both electric and hydraulic have advantages and disadvantages, are there any other cons for the hydraulic other than being slow, i know that the motor has to be running as well but the electric will not run for long if the vehicle is not running, are they heavier than the electric? I would have thought that the hydraulic would be more reliable.

Mattie,

My understanding of the hydraulic winches are that they have the potential to be far better than electric jobbies. The biggest shortfall is with the capacity of most vehicles' power steering pumps to provide enough grunt over an extended period of time, to get the job done efficiently.

I have read of people having fit an extra (or larger) haydraulic pump to operate the winch.

We have a bloke in our club who I helped to fit a Ox hydraulic winch a few years ago, but apart from tensioning the cable once we'd fitted it, I'm almost 100% sure he hasn't used it since........

i have an ox hydraulic winch speed might be a consideration in a competition but in real life you winch a bit stop check and winch again you have to wind the cable on the drum smoothly with any winch speed is not an issue....my son got his patrol horribly stuck 3 weeks ago took 5 hours of work and winching to retrieve the vehicle would not have done that with electric winch....no flat batteries no bad electrical contacts less maintainance overall.....but each to his own.....my mate has 8000lb electric winch on a single pull it will not pull his cruiser across flat grass with wheels in gear and brake on. my 10000lb ox will drag my patrol across concrete with wheels locked

Mattie there are 2 types of hydraulic winches, PTO & power steering pump driven. The PTO winches are very strong & fast under load often pulling in excess of their rating. The power steering driven winches are slow........painfully slow. Just back from a trip up the high country & watched the slowest recovery I've ever seen. At times it was difficult to even tell if the winch rope was moving. Each time the vehicle gained traction the winch overrun caging the cable. In the end it was quicker to bring in an electric winch to finish the job. Now I'm told that these winches will pull all day & that's just as well as that's how long it will take you to recover yourself from a sticky situation. Pepper above is testiment to that with his 5 hour recovery.
IMHO the best value for money & capable winch for recreation 4 wheel driving is the 9500 electric.
