I have a 2001 petrol/gas 100 series auto with a problem in the gear box. The problem is that maybe once or twice a week (car driven every day) the auto won't kick down a gear as when you put the boot in or accelerating out of a corner etc.
The overdrive still works fine in and out of 3rd gear but if I stop the car, turn the ignition off, restart the car all is fine till the next time it happens which maybe the next day or the next week.
Has anyone had similar problems and what would be the solution.

Regards
Mal

isnt it a 4 speed auto??
Best bet is to get a mechanic to diagnose the ECU for faults. It sounds to me like it may be going into limp mode for some reason??

Take it to an auto specialist ho should be able to quickly diagnose it. Maybe in the kicdown adjustment, a dirty connector or the neutral safety start switch may be playng up. When this goes it can do funny nthings to your gear changing. In my case it bused to jump out of reverse, did funny things in overdrive and would'nt manually hold in first gear.

Hi there, I have the exact same problem, I took it to toyota and they played with it for 6 hrs and found nothing. they checked the computer errors and came up with nothing. It was having the problem when i took it there and they pluged there computer into the diognostic port and still nothing. They asked if i changed the windshield as they suspect that it leaks water onto the drivers side kick panel and the wiring plug is getting wet. Love to hear what you have found

Thanks Ponyboy, I'm still in the initial stages of sorting it out. How long have you had the problem for ?

Cheers Mal

Hi i bought the car about 3 months ago and noticed it soon after. Was more than likely already there. Sometimes my car can drive fine for hundredss of KM and then it will have the issue. Other times i could just be going to the local shops and it will play up. toyota and the transmition specialists were no help. Lots of $$ and no closer to solving my issue. Some one in the USA said they had a similar issue but it was there windshield leaking onto the wiring conector for the loom. My windshield has been replaced at somtime so will have to check it out. maybe in Summer it wont do it. The car actualy goes into what is called limp mode. that is the car thinks that something has gone wrong and shuts down the computer controll to the gearbox alowing you to drive the car but not do a kick down. It's so you can get it to the garage to get it fixed. that is if a mechanic out there knew how to fix it. Please keep me posted on how you go as i can not think of anything else.
