Garmin GPS nuvi 300

As a new user of a GPS i have a specific request for help. When i select
Where to ?
Address
Spell State / Province
The GPS will not allow me to input the state (ie Victoria)
As soon as i press V the GPS go straight to the message of "No Matches Found"
I have had the GPS for only 1 week and have used it once prior to today and at that time it allowed me to enter a state (from recollection).
Turned GPS of then on - made no difference.
Have reset the GPS - made no difference.
Any assistance appreciated.

spanner, map, map info, and make sure the City Navigator v7 is ticked

You might gain some info from my GPS website too, some ofthe functions of the300 will be same a 660

Doug, I've got the Nuvi 310.....is there anyway to load different mapping into it other than street maps? ie for off-roading?
