Roller Door removal

Treading Lightly

Not a question about 4WDs, but their home. Is there any precautions in removing a roller door from its position? What happens to the BIG SPRING inside?

When you loosen the clamps on the axle it will unwind and release the spring tension. Not usually much tension anyway with the door raised.

Usually the centre bar is clamped on the ends, if this is the case with yours I would just loosen the clamps and watch the bar spin. It wont spin for long if the door is up as when the door goes up it's retracted.

The biggest precaution to take in terms of roller door removal is to make sure you've taken OFF your roof racks before driving into the garage or shed. haha! Trust me on this one - I bet I'm not the only one either!

Now it's 4WD related! ;-)

If you are removing it to throw out, knock the plastic/metal feet of the bottom and roll it all the way up. Then tie it up with a old bit of rope or ratchet strap and chuck it straight out.

Yeah... you guys make this sound simple..... Believe me you can get into more strife than Flash Gordon doing this. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES COMPLETELY REMOVE THE CLAMPS BEFORE THE SPRING TENSION IS RELEASED!!!
If you do you may find the thing unwinds and there may be just enough friction between the central axel to drive the whole ensemble off the bracket, knock you off your ladder spin 90 dego's and smash the side of the other car sitting in the other side of the 2 car garage.
I found that releasing the tension, under control, with a pair of stillsons the best & safest way to go....

Be very careful lowering the rolled up door to the floor they are very heavy too.

Thanks guys for all your help. Out of all this is to make sure that the car is well away from the door, and that I am straped to the ladder with a pair of stillsons in both hands, and the ambulance waiting in the driveway. Wish me luck !!!!!!!

Tie a rope to the handle before you remove the clamps. You can then control it with the rope, and tie it back to itself. If you remove the spring tension before rolling the thing up they can get awkward to handle.

Also, I don't believe they are particularly light. Get some help to lift the thing down.

I have been through this. There is massive tension on the spring. I had the stillson on the shaft, a buddy loosened the u bolts, I let the spring unwind half a turn, then the buddy re-tighten the u bolts. You then re locate the stillson and repeat. The door in my case takes three blokes to lower. What is really scary is if you don't tighten the u-bolts enough when you have finished and the whole spring un-winds when you are back in the house - one hell of a racket.

If you are planning on re-using this door, be very careful with releasing the tension.

The "recommended" way of removing a roller door for safety and re-use is to roll the door all the way up, place a tie-down around it at both ends (about 200-300 in) and tension the tie-downs up until the door is bound. Remove the door tracks from the mullions and retighten the straps. You may then release the axle clamps and remove the door. There is a lot of energy in the spring in the door and even left in the up position and loosening the clamps can give you a very big fright when it all goes wrong. (amongst other things).

For the sake of safety and a possible re-use or resale, I would do as I have suggested as you get another side benefit, the door won't un-roll whilst you are skuttleing down the ladder and crush you with with your leg trapped in the ladder and your head banged against the wall.

Then your safe to undo the clamps. If its the first one youve done (sounds like it) get at least one other person to help.

Make sure you impress upon him that he only undoes the straps as the last thing.

Otherwise he will end up with a pile of c rap blowing in the wind, if it is still hanging that is.

I watched the dude install mine and he said half of his jobs were re-installing rollerdors that people had 'attacked' themselves.

Now here are a couple tips he gave/showed me re this process.

(1) If new, do not under any circumstance undo the the packaging shrink wrap until you have the roller door up on the brackets with the U-bolts nipped up after applying a tad of tension.

(2) If you are going to play with it, then roll it up and secure it, (these days a ratchet strap etc would be the preferref option and then make sure you have conrol of things

Apparently the release and lowering of the door into the guides is the last thing you do.

Well the door came down yesterday, all without drama or injuries to any persons. I followed everbodys advice and it,s now all strapped up ready to be carted away and reinstalled.
