Patrol Cold Start Drama's

Hows it going Guys,

While recently at the National Gathering at Warraweena, I was lucky enough to receive an award for having the most unreliable vehicle in the paddock . Quite a feat considering the company I was keeping !

The first morning of my stay saw more than a few bonnets up , then it was my turn , plenty of cranking power and fuel could be pumped from the outlet of the filter. The only way it would start was with Phil forcing fuel in with the priming pump while I cranked it. I had parked up a hill overnight and a few members thought a leak in the fuel system let the filter and line drain back into the tank.

When I got home I replaced all the clamps with quality ones and thought my troubles over. Wrong.

I just spent a couple of nights at Jindabine , with low overnight temps. Before getting there I fuelled up at Cooma , would you expect to get alpine blend there. Also put some Diesel Power additive in the tank. Two mornings it was cold enough to have thick frost over my car and ice on our deck,

I had the same problems with no light off . Finally got it started by cranking with half throttle on , the second day tried warm water on fuel pump filter etc and still ended up using the throttle. When the engine caught after using the throttle it would sort of do slow chugging with lots of exhaust smoke for approx 30 sec then idled ok.

Anyone got any ideas ( I guess I am asking for it )

Sorry to see that you're still experiencing difficulties mate.
Have you had the glow plugs checked/replaced? You only need to have one or 2 duds and the engine won't want to start in the cold climate stuff.
Also, I'm a great believer in having an extra electric fuel pump (Facet pump) installed to sort of "force" fuel up through the filter/s. They only push it @ 3 psi, but if there has been any sort of flow-back etc due to parking on a slope, the little pump will sort that out very quickly. (It also makes it a breeze to re-prime after doing a filter change too).
Hope this helps a bit and that you get to the bottom of it real soon.

The way it was chugging , sounded like a petrol motor with a few leads off, so a couple of dud glowplugs sounds reasonable.

Found the engine troubleshooting part in the manual today ( conveniently not under troubleshooting in the contents ) so I should be set.

I was having the same problem here in Penrith when we were getting the -2's in the morning, not to the same extent as you but I was getting the chugging for a few sec's and lots of smoke (grey) which I was told is cold combustion temps, I was told to check my glow plugs as well, but it has warmed up a little in the mornings and its not doing it now so I have got lazy and not checked them ;).

I think the problem has been masked a bit cause my Patrol normally lives in the garage and it feels warm compared to cold mornings. This morning was pretty fresh at 5am , even though I waited for the coil light to go out it still cranked for a fair while till it started , also has been smoking a bit on start up but I thought it was the injectors on the way out.

Bit of a shame you had to pull the pin on your trip , lucky I didnt go anyway cause my truck wouldnt have started after a night up there LOL. Hopefully I /we can make the next one.
