Thanks for all of the info on this forum in relation to the ZD30's and all of their problems especially with the "Hole In The Piston" sagas.
Just thought I would let everyone out there know that I have a current model November 04 Series 4 GU Patrol and the Motor has just done its usual trick at basically dead on 60,000Kms.
The dealer that we were towed to has pulled it down to discover a hole in the 4th piston.
Vehicle is still under new car warranty and has an impeccable service history, always at Nissan and oil / filter changes at every 5000k's (at Nissan as well).
I thought that they had solved these problems. Obviously not yet

I though the nissan camp say the series 3 are okay??? This is a 4??

This is also only one vehicle as opposed to the one or two a fortnight that used to be posted on here with the older models.

I thought a current model would be a 07' model? not a 3 yo 04 model

Why would you do the filters and oil every 5000k? i thought they had 10k service intervals

If you use a 4x4 as it should be ....dirt roads, working hard up steep inclines etc etc,......then you should follow the hand book recommendations and change your oil more often.......and most will say at half the normal intervals....so while your at it, you may as well change the filter too...

And if you don't use the 4x4 as a proper 4x4, then a bit of extra oil is cheap insurance as well ( especially if you have a Nissan ......oops, only joking )

We have followed the Nissan recommendations and changed with the recommended oil at 5,000 kms. With the modern engines, i believe in following manufacturers recommendations; they do it for a reason. Look after your vehicle, and hopefully, it will look after you. Ours has (reluctantly now for sale).

I have my suspicions about this post under the name "rapid". Why has he not elaborated on his claim that "Series 4 ZD30's (ie plural) still burn pistons". Are there other examples? Details on his unfortunate experience are minimal. Why has he not gone into more detail?
One post and then nothing more smells like a troll to me.

Trol or not, word I heard it is the injectors not spraying the fuel properly, which causes a hot spot which causes hole in piston.

?????????

just what I heard.

Okay to put some of you sceptics to rest I just thought that it might have been of some interest to someone out there that this does still happen.
The reason that I have not ellaborated on this issue at this stage is that the claim has not even made it to Nissan as yet and I am fairly sure that a little bit of animinity just for the moment might be a good thing.
If any reasons are given as to the failurte etc. I will post it on here.
I was led to believe that some additional minor changes were made to the ZD30 (I had better not make it plural as someone may try and make something else out of it) in the series 4. This is why the specs are slightly different from the series 3 etc.
This vehicle has gone through nearly all of the items that I have read on this forum being popping intercooler hoses off as well as also splitting another then there was an issue with the oil pressure switches which took months for them to finally work out.
We are still very happy with this vehicle even though it has had to be towed on a number of occaisions over the last two years. I can honestly say that the Service response and road side assist to date has been second to none. Needless to say that when we do look at replacing it I will think seriously about the 4.2TD but in saying that I have not even started to look into if they have any problems. These motors did have a bad name in the past and I thought that all had been sorted out. This is part of the reason why I changed the oil at every 5000K's also made sure that the oil came in the 5L containers from spare parts as I had heared rumours that a number of dealers may not have used the designated oil as it was not available in large quantities until recent times.
Thanks for the replies but this was only started to let people out there know that it does still happen even with good regular servicing and on the current model (yes even if nearley 3 years old) series 4 GU Patrol.
I came out of a Petrol Troopy that I had had for nearly 14 years into the Patrol and I can honestly say that I havn't looked back since. Bear in mind though that the toyo also had its little problems from time to time but it never blew its moter in over 500,000k's

Thanks for your detailed explanation Rapid,

There has always been questions about the service history of vehicles haveing these types of problems but you can count this out with your vehicle. I look forward to hearing what Nissan say was the cause.

rapid,

Thanks for the further information. I too am very interested, being the owner of a Dec 2003 series three ZD30 approaching 100,00KM. I have had no engine problems but did have the left rear wheel break studs. This is a relatively common occurrence on GU patrols with alloy wheels, but it can happen to Toyotas as well. The answer is to check your wheel nuts regularly after a wheel change and use a torque wrench.

'also made sure that the oil came in the 5L containers from spare parts '

I have an early '04 3.0l and change my oil every 5000k's also. I change my oil recently and the oil was always blue in color. The last 2 5l containers I bought were brown. Hmmm was it the same oil without the dye?

Okay here it is. Nissan did a full warranty replacement on the motor and supplied a full long motor as apparently the head was damaged between the third and fourth cylinder. The motor had burnt a hole in the number 4 piston and there was mention that there may have been some damage to the other pistons as well but when asked about his they shut up tighter than a clam.

It took 3 weeks to have the motor replaced and only picked up last week. Motor seems to have less power than it used to and the economy is poor at the moment as well. I have been told that it may be a bit tight as all is new.
They did not give me any paper work at all in relation to the motor change but did give me service paper work to say they did a 60K service for free and also stamped my book. When asked anything about the motor and what may have caused it they avoided the questions like the plague.

Can anyone tell me how do they get around the engine number do they have blanks that they just stamp when changing over or what.
They told me that I do not need to worry about the engine numbers as all is okay (???)

Besides the dent in the top of my passengers guard and the paint scratched off the drivers side guard I guess all is okay just waiting to put a couple of tanks of fuel through it to see what happens now with the power and economy etc...

Through some friends of mine in government departments etc.. I have been told of a number of current problems with late model Patrols 2006 even 2007 with gear box quirks such as can not disengage 4WD and the like. Have heard of two other ZD30's in current model (series 4) with piston issue Nissan replaces them quick smart no questions asked.

If anyone can tell me if the power and economy is expected to be like this for a bit or not it would be appreciated.

Thanks

Rapid

Good to hear you got it all sorted. I wondered what the outcome was. It took mine 30k km to start returning better mileage.
