Caravan / Camper Insurance

G'Day, Just purchased a campervan and was wondering who is the best to get insurance for these?? Are there special mobs that do caravans or do you just do it thru the normal car insurers??

Any good/bad stories?

Thanks in advance.

Well due to my advanced age and the fact that I no longer work full time I found APIA very good, had one claim - I wrote of a bowser at Parkes, entirely my fault. No doubt Lucy will want the full and sordid details but the repair was done quickly at my total convenience and the excess is $100. The offer a recovery servce too if your car breaks down and you are stuck in your van somewhere.
Their rate was very competitive too.

G'day Hughsey, I have all of my insurance through RAA, and consequently various discounts because of that.
They were streets ahead of anybody else with the premium, but also covered up to 2K contents.
In a CT, I think that's terrific, as long as I have locks on the zippers, and it's forced entry.

G'Day Dave,

Yeah I just rang up CIL, MHIA and RAA and the prices ranged from $297 for CIL, to $190 for RAA and they have the lowest Excess. Will have to wait for the Policy booklets to look at the finer detail but RAA looks pretty bloody good at the moment.

Got to start looking at my 4X4 insurance next month too.....

Give us a ring in the morning Dave and we'll organise a time for you to come over.

I'm in the same boat and so this week have compared NRMA, GIO, QBE, MHIA, and 2 others that escape me.

My opinion is for price and cover that MHIA is for me.

For what it is worth.

Thanks Skippy. Thats holding tru for me out of the 3 I've rung so far too. Have a look at the prices so far in above reply.

This is all based on insurance of $17,500. And I have never been a naughty boy so "rating 1".

Hi Hughsey
For what it is worth we have just insured our new van with CIL they were the cheapest, RAA was a very close second, I hope I never have to find out if I have made a mistake.
Good Luck

Too right Debbie, I'm of the same opinion. I got stung a few years ago when my Cruiser got stolen and lost out big time. It definately pays to read the fine print and although a cheap premium looks attractive at the end of the day its what you get when you use the policy that counts. Those additional benefits will typically well and truely pay for themselves in the event of a claim. In the end its all a big gamble.

Some interesting comments there & some names I have not heard of : APIA RAA MHIA. Who are the underwriters?
We for many years had our vehicles etc. insured through NRMA
but are in the process of changing, our reason being that here in Newcastle they have a crappy assessment arangement in the event of an accident & when I talk to reputable panel shops they all tell me that NRMA assessors "squeeze" the quoted repair times and often will insist on the use of second hand parts.
Most panel shops in our area speak well of GIO & Allianze & a few others.
We unfortunatley have had the need for a number of claims the past 18 months or so ( the wife of course!!)
So from my point of view premium cost is only part of the equation.
We are insured though National seniors who are underwritten by Allianze, but excess on a claim for our Van ($375.00) I was told seemed prett high.

Hi,
I'm in QLD and am with suncorp for my van only because they give a 10% discount for 6 insurances, I have house and contents, ctp on both cars and both car insurance with them. Haven't claimed until last christmas, a bad storm at eumundi caused water to get to my inverter in the van and boom up in smoke it went. Also other things got wet but they came good. Phoned Suncorp the next day and after a quote to repair was more than replacement they said to buy a new one without hesitation and they will pay me less $150 excess. That was great but in June this year went to check my 12 month old Honda 2kva genny before using it and found the inverter in it was faulty, immediately got checked under warranty only to have them say corrosion had killed the inverter and not covered under warranty. I then thought it did get wet in that storm at christmas but kept working, maybe that was the cause of the corrosion. Suncorp came to the party and bought me a brand new genny (no excess this time) even though the repair bill was $1400 odd and less than the price of the new one, they didn't want any other problems down the track in case something else went wrong with it. Buy the way the place I originally bought the genny from for $2000 less $200 cash back, gave me the new one for $1750(reimbursed by suncorp) and I also got $200 cash back.

Well that is a GOOD story. You don't hear about insurance companies being that considerate now a days. I might have to give Suncorp a ring. Thanks Wazzaaaa.

Hi Hughesly,
I have in the past heard bad storys about all insurance companys including suncorp but I think it depends on the asseser, I also had an accident with my nissan patrol in January. first one in 23 years I might add and it was my fault, I reversed back at an intersection quickly as I had over shot the line in front of oncomming trafic when bang I hit a car behind. Did no damage to my 4x4 apart from scratches to the towber but did $4,200 damage to the pulsar behind "wow". Phoned suncorp with details and have not heard anything since and I still have my rating one for life.
My good run with them after years of no claims
