Any BAD Reports on Oztrail Tourer 9??

I'm about to get another new tent and was in Anaconda today and noticed their $199.00 Fathers Day special for Club members.

Being a "serious" camper I'd always frowned down on this brand in the past and was strongly considering another Oztent or Blackwolf.

Firstly, the main reason I've given up on Oztent RV4 is my height. Anyone over 6'2" can't stand up in them to get dressed and rubbing the roof of any tent first thing in the morning while getting changed is a bad idea (drips everywhere!).

Back to the subject at hand, I've searched pretty thoroughly and all-in-all I hear good reports about this cheap Oztrail Tourer 9. So why pay out $800+ for a Blackwolf Turbo? $600 difference is massive...

Cliches abound in my head..."Chinese quality"..."you get what you pay for" etc.

But why pay $600.00 more for a Blackwolf when the Tourer 9 sets up faster, is just as waterproof, has the same height and similar space?

Please someone put me out of my misery and convince me either way LOL

got the oztrail 10 plus, which has the extended rear section, gives us plenty of room.
comparitive tent was the freedom at $1200, we paid $400ish.
very happy with our oztrail, zips, canvas etc.
maybe the floor is not as good as the frredom but can't see why its 3 times the money.
one thing, "separate internal weatherproof door panel" as they quote. if it rains hard, zip the front panel up.

G'day Howie, the zips on mine (front doors) failed on mine after about 18 mths. The teeth just would not sit in properly and kept busting open. The front awning is useless and the centre pole fastener busts after not too much use, which is not good as it is holding up the tent for you. You can weld a nut onto it and make a tee piece bolt if this happens. I paid around $330 for ours but we use an Oztent RV5 now, excellent design and versatility with the options.

well there you go geoff, confused now?
go to shop and ask for an erection (i did), make your own mind up on the zips and canvas etc.
if you stick with the oztrail9 a side pole unit sounds like the go.
i would suggest that the awning on most centre pole tents are next to useless because of their shape.
in prolonged heavy rain an extra piece of canvas or tarp can be fitted.
some centre pole tents have this ability (not the oztrail) , i just put a tarp up with my extra poles (or go to the nearest pub)

They leak - make sure you apply heaps of seam sealant etc.

Carry a trap (cheap one) incase of heavy rain or long periods of rain (to place over top of tent)

They are fast to put up and take down (about 10 minutes either way).

It will can longer to prep the ground...

"They leak - make sure you apply heaps of seam sealant etc."

Hi Marq.

Your feedback flies in the face of what most people say according to my research. 99% say they DON'T leak...of course you have to wet them a few times before use.

Regarding groundsheet and tarp, that pretty-much applies to all tents, Oztent and Blackwolfs included?

I have to waterproof mine a week before I use it otherwise it will leak.
I've used the spray on stuff and that didn't work i have brought the roll on stick but haven't used it still then.
They are crap.

There swaps are meant to be ok.

Hi Geoff and we have just spent 5 weeks on Cape York with our tent and went through all kinds of rain and wind and had no leaks at all. This was it's first time out so must wait and see how it performs over time. We have the side pole set and think it is well worth having as no center pole getting in the way. Only use it to set up and pull down. When it rains we drop the front flap and tie it out with a couple of Ockie straps.I have not used any extra sealant on ours but did do the wet/dry thing for four days before setting out. Seems to be value for money to us.

You answered your own question, why pay good money for quailty, when you can pay$199 for crap. It is not the price of a tent it is the quality, check tent info:

Lucky I have stumps for legs..no problem in my Oztent.

Plus, with the Fly there is no condensation inside..exterior stays dry..and heaps cooler in the hot weather..
Canvas is always dry..so easy to pack with a 'thick head' :)

Do a Topic Search on Oztrail Tourer, you're not the first to go there.
We've had a couple ..first lasted 11 months and literally started to disintegrate. The fabric started to "dissolve", they claimed it was excessive chemicals in the dye, or the preservative or something. It was replaced under warranty, and the new one leaked like a sieve, even after I had it cured for 4 or 5 days by setting it up, soaking it daily and letting it dry out. They returned my money.
Great warranty, not too sure about the product.

Not trying to start a 'bun fight' here but we bought a 'Demo' Tourer9 from Souther Cross. I'm 6'2 and can easy stand inside. It is superior quality and will last for years. It has good meaty zippers. Just back from Cape York with a few nites of drizzly rain with no leaks.
With just a little help from SWMBO we can have it up (the tent!!) in 5 minutes.
By 'demo'- it was probably erected at a 4WD show and thats all. Still with full warranty. And saved quite a few $$$.

Just an aside. How is it that Anaconda can constantly cut 50 to 75% off thier products. Does it mean we are paying far to much for thier Chinese imports the rest of the time?

geoff
4 people i know with oztrail and all happy after 2-3 yrs of use.
i have t9 plus and its great.
i also have 10X10 southern cross which after 4 years has broken front zip, leaks on back wall and has holes in the floor.

both are great tents-southern cross 10X10 slightly quicker to set up than a oztrail T9.

price them yourself and make your own mind up.

cheers
