100 ser turbo problem

Hi all , I have a mechanic that I trust that has told me that I have an oil loss of about a quarter to a half a litre and that when he replaced the thermostat that he noticed oil on the inlet side of the turbo in the hoseand there was movement on the the shaft on the turbo prop that seemed to him a little excessive he also did a compression test and all CYL are the same we are thinking maybe the turbo needs to be looked at by someone that deals with after market safaris ,is there anyone out there that might be able to steer me in the right direction as I'm freaking out a little ,because I'm towing my van to QLD and then going onto Fraser for a week (without van) and I would like to have a clear mind when it comes to my 4B I only just did an oil change 3 weeks ago and we just did the timing belt and tentioner I don't know if I have missed anything but if I have please tell me .
Thank you all that took the time to read this post and I am biting my nails at the moment and waiting for a response .

was the oil level right before hand after last oil change?mine has oil in the plumbing right thru the system(which is normal for a diesel)was the shaft movement up/down or in/out as the later i wouldnt stress too much about it,how many ks has it done hope this helps cheers Paul

Hi TD , Well the level is something that I will be keeping a close eye on for the next few weeks and as for movement he told me it was up and down I think but I will contact him tomorrow to confirm as for Ks it has done 226,000KM which I have been told is fine and not excessive he told me that the compression was 32 but he has a chart at work that has a conversion table and he will tell me on Monday ( works at Toyota dealership) .

John before jumping to worst case scenario's, pull the breather hose from your rocker cover to the air filter assembly and check to see if the turbo is sucking oil through the hose then compressing it and sending it through the crossover tube to the inlet manifold.
I'm assuming your engine is the 1HZ, this engine can suffer from a bit of "blow by" and pressurise the rocker cover and push out oil. On some 80 series 1HZ's the vent in the rocker cover has a series of flutes that needed to be closed up slightly to restrict the flow a little more after a turbo was added.
If it's obvious your getting oil through the breather hoses and I think this will be the case, close up the vent a little and put an oil/air breather catch tank in the line to allow the oil to condense out of the oil/air mist and collect in the catch can. As it fills it can then be disposed of properly rather than allowing it back through the intake system.

Hi Andrew, mate I cleaned all the hoses about 3 weeks ago because I had oil around the hoses and was advised to bend the 2 tabs closed a small amount to reduce the chance of when a oil change is done that the oil does not flow too fast and fill the rocker cover and come out the breather pipe which is sort of the same result as what you are talking about but I would like to try the catch tank idea but I'm not sure if this is an off the shelf product or home made so if you can elaborate a little this would be very helpful thanks for your input mate as I will be trying all options .

John and Lucy, most of the catch can installs I've seen have been off the shelf products usually through Autobarn and the like.
I can't comment on their quality as I haven't seen one pulled apart but they appear to be doing the job the owners say and do collect oil coming through the breather hoses.
The pic below is one installed by the owner of a ZD30 Patrol on the Patrol4x4.com forum so it gives you the idea of how they are plumbed in to the breather hose.

After posting last, night I googled catch cans in Australia and had an amazing amout of hits.

Various prices related to types of finish and design.

I am going to contact MTQ on Monday and ask them about the amount of oil that can safely go through the turbo etc etc and if necessary I 'll source a catch can and fit it

Lucy, I work on the premise that it's better to have NO oil or at the very least "minimal oil" going through the intake side of the compressor. The one thing oil going through the intake does do is coat the intercooler (if you have one) internally with a liberal coating of oil which effects the efficiency of your intercooler.
