It is really a matter of personal preference - and of price. The Cruiser has better suspension and running gear for hard off-road work - but you pay for it. However, many of my mates are happy with their Nissan - but for my money the Cruiser provides greater comfort and versatility, both on and off road..

Both are good vehicles. GQ & GU Patrols have stronger gear boxes and running gear than 80 and 100 series cruisers. If you are touring on gravel roads but not going serious offroad then you may be tempted by the extra comfort of the independant front end cruiser (the cost is wheel travel). I spent the money I saved by buying a Patrol on a good aftermarket suspenion system, as that is better than both nissan and toyota factory suspension.

I was in this same situation a little while back. I hadn't owned either of these vehicles before. I friend gave me some advice which I found quite worthwhile in helping me make my decision.

He suggested that I contact the 4WD Rental companies regarding the various trucks' performances and maintenance histories. Where possible I tried to speak to the managers or senior mechanics. Along with all the other advice I got on this sometimes heated debate, it helped me make my decision. I made my enquires about 18 months ago so it would probably be worthwhile getting more up to date information to help you with your decision.

If you want the goods you pay the price, -- buy a Landcruiser and you also have the resale value, stick to the standard Diesel with all the basics- Barn doors etc and you will never regret your parting with hard earned dollars for the best vehicle that money can buy if you want to travel throughout Australian Outback with as little if no interuption ! Mate they are the best, not the cheapest, just the best.......

The patrol is better value for your money but it comes down to personal preference...(it also depends on which Patrol you buy and which cruiser).
I have a GU 4.2 Turbodiesel. Boujght it new done $85000km since july 99 did the VIC high country several times, Cape York etc.
Not a single problem, excellent vehicle.
Out in the bush, mechanics say they fix more Cruiser diffs and gearboxes than Patrols.
Also Cruisers are going softer on each model...
Warranty and support is better on Toyotas.

The previous 5 responses are just as would be expected,its like Ford vs Holden! Ive got a 3.0L Patrol after having a 4.5L one,both had no problems.Make a choice and if youre not happy after 2 years or before 80000 kms trade it in on the other, you shouldnt lose anything in that time.
