Hi All
We have just ended a 4 week outback odyssey and we have just watched our video and their is heaps of wind noise on the video.
Just wondering if anyone nose of a way to eliminate the wind noise while taking the video.

Mal
Had a similar problem to yours while videoing on the Great Ocean Road. It was then as a typical bloke that I decided to read the camera instructions. Mine is a Panasonic DVC and has a awind noise reduction feature. Most cameras are pretty well similar. go to camera functions- then recording set up - then wind cut- and turn to on. Does not entirely delete wind noise but makes it 90% better than not having it turned on. Hope this helps.
Cheers

The best way is with an external microphone with a wind sock/screen.

Agree with Shaker. I have tried everything-- wind cut set up on the camera, cloth over the mic point etc etc and after our last efforts have now gone and purchased an external mike. It pins to our collar just below the chin and as long as you are careful with direction cuts out most if not all wind noise. Now the problem is to remember to turn the thing on....
Other option is just turn the volume down if and when you are editing.

We just shoot the video.... and unless there is a particular bit of narration that we want to keep, if the wind noise is too much, we edit out the audio and replace it with music. I guess you could replace the narration while editing if you need to. Music also makes the video more "watchable".

You need a decent external microphone with a wind screen cover on it. Quiet as a sleeping baby. Any decent Video retailer should be able to help you out - such as Diamonds.

If you want the vision and then add a voice over/music afterwards the simplest trick is to get a plug from Dick Smith and stick it in the extension mic socket and this will switch off the sound recording as it is expecting the sound to come through the plug from a microphone.

Just remove the plug when you want background noise as in engine noise etc. This works fine especially for panning at lookouts where wind is a problem and also stops extraneous sounds from other visitors who might be at the lookout

I don't know that you'll be able to edit it all out but you should be able to reduce it considerably by doing some digital processing on the audio track - this is a little involved but not beyond the capability of anyone who is familiar with computers (don't need to be an expert) this programme (Audacity) is an excellent freeware sound editor with various filtering and effects capabilities:

Audcaity sound editor

You could also use it to filter the bit where you said "@$#*^!)" at the wrong time :) and to add music or additional commentary etc.
