80 Series wheel bearing socket

I need a socket or tube spanner (54mm) to remove my front wheel bearings for service. The local tools supplier in my town can't locate a 1/2 inch drive socket of that size or a tube spanner. He offered a 3/4 inch drive but the o/s diameter of the socket was too big to fit inside the recess. Can anyone tell me a brand name of a socket (1/2 inch drive) or tube spanner and a suppliers name and phone number to source this piece. I thought about making a tool but would prefer not to if at all possible. TIA Tony.

Tony, try your local Toyota service centre, there probably guaranteed to have one, or try somewhere like Glenfords tools or Hare @ Forbes or some of the earth moving repair centres, hope this helps, cheers, Dave.

Hi, I agree that making one isn't the ideal solution, but after similar lack-of-spanner-for-
hub-nuts on my landrover, I made one by bending a length of flat bar into a U shape and putting a bolt through it an inch from the end to tighten it on the nut faces. I could then put a screwdriver or similar through the U to turn it (mostly they don't need to be that tight though). Hope this helps. Cheers, Alex

A friend of mine has one (which he has owned for some years). It is a tube spanner with the following identification 'OTC 1901 2 3/32" USA'
It is a tight fit inside the hub. It is 3/4" drive.
One of the major tool suppliers should be able to chase one of them down for you

Thanks all who replied. My local Toyata and one in a nearby town couldn't supply a socket. There's no special Toyota tool. One said their mechanics got there's from 'Snap On', the mobile tool guys. Thanks Jim for your info. I'll try and chase one down.

Tony, I have a genuine Toyota tube spanner with 1/2 inch drive. If you're here in Australia the Toyota part number is 09607 - 60020. The cost was somewhere between AUS$50-60. Good luck

Tony, I have a GQ patrol,same problem, solved by using a piece of exhaust pipe (new) 2 1/2", 2 3/8"
what ever size suits. Approx. 6" long and shape one end to fit the nut,the other end just drill a hole and use a screw driver. Works well and costs bugger all.
