Hi,

I've been with AAMI on 4WD insurance for some years. Purchased a new Prado GXL in June & the insurance renewal is coming up.

The renewal is $847 on $55K. Every year I check around & this year other companies are much cheaper - eg: NRMA & APIA both around $300 cheaper.

I am surprised by this & wonder what others experience has been.

Anyone with experience with APIA on 4WD's? Do they cover off road?

Thanks, Willy

I am not sure what 4wd insurance with AAMI is. I have alsways had normal car insurance with AAMI for all my 4wds but if I have an accident off road the the excess is a few hundred $$ more. The car is covered anywhere in Aust - it is nothing special.

I have generally found AAMI to be cheaper than most other companies.

Cheers

We had all our insurances with AAMI, - great company to deal with, but they kept upping the premiums. Like you we found every other insurance company to be cheaper, so changed everything to RAA, and we're $1200 a year better off for 3 vehicles and home/contents, and same level of insurance.

My policies are all with AAMI - a few years ago the Household policy was revised with much higher sums insured, and the premium went down after ???

The best bet is to ring them for a quote as if you are a new customer, and you may find the price a lot lower.

They seem to work on the basis that people are lazy at renewal and will just pay.

Hi
I had all of my Insurance with AAMI until earlier this year. I had to make a claim (Lost jewellery) and guess what, not covered. The wording about coverage was most confusing and even the AAMI telephone guy admitted it was hard to know exactly what was covered.

Moved everything to APIA and read the wording v carefully and they appear to offer better coverage for the same $$$. Time will tell.

Hi

yes realise they are the same but the policies are quite different. The AAMI contents insurance is cheaper but excludes many things that you assume are covered. APIA is more detailed and gives better coverage.

You need to read the fine print closely and even then its hard to understand just how you are covered.

Depends,

Are you happy with the idea of getting multiple quotes for all your insurance? House, contents, car, caravan, boat:

I insure house, contents, sedan, 4WD, 2 x greenslip, boat, camper trailer with NRMA.

Each time an individual renewal comes up I do a quick check and the odd one comes out cheaper than NRMA, I think the best was $120 a year for the house. Then I found some funnies, one company started to look good but they would not insure my boat, another would insure everything except the camper trailer, then another only covered house and contents as a combined policy, they would not do one without the other.

The question I then asked myself was. Do I wish to be a run of the mill customer to many insurers or a better than average customer of one? Chucking logic out the window I said stuff it, I can't be bothered mucking around and just renewed all with NRMA. Had I spilt all the policies I was looking at a saving of just over $270 a year. I reckon that equates to a pay rate of 13 cents an hour over a year.

My 4WD insurance came up last month, did a quick check and got a quote $82 cheaper. Phoned NRMA and asked why their premium with "multi policy discount" was dearer than a competitors single policy. NRMA revised their premium downwards by $38.00. O.K. They did not match but at the end of the year I reckon I'm still better of keeping the lot with one company.

Another real saver on ANY insurance policy is when it comes to making a claim.

Over the years, and I'm a real OLD bugger, I lodged claims on both house and contents, separate claims, 3 claims on sedans and two on 4WD. Not once have I had any hassles, all claims have been made on the phone, never had to sit and wait for an "assessor" to check the business, everything settled promptly.

That is where you save and get maximum value for money.

Just my thoughts,

Ian

A large number of years ago, I had a vehicle covered by AAMI, and after a tyre failure and roll over, it took them four months to finally agree to fix it rather than spend the extra $32 which was thier difference between write off and repair figures.
I only use them for a free 2 to 3 week insurance via cover notes whenever I buy another vehicle. I figure I have had the best part of a years free insurance doing this.
Cheers
I'll get there someday, or die wanting to.

I'm not sure you got anything for free......if you had a claim on them during this period you would be required to pay the premium you owed them before they met any claim.

Willy, suggest check out the TCIS website - www.tcis.com.au

They are brokers who have arranged special policies for the National 4WD Council and its affiliates, which include many 4WD clubs. This is the only source I know of for insurance specifically tailored to the needs of people who go seriously off the beaten track. They cover all your camping too, and your camper trailer. Full details, including the policy wording is on their website.

Worth asking other insurers who pays for towing from, for example, the middle of the Simpson or Kalumbaru. If you get a favourable answer, ask for it in writing!

John,

That's if you can get them to reply.
I have been waiting for over 4 weeks now so they can stick their insurance.

Cheers Kev

Just went thru this excercise 3 weeks ago. I was with Bushtrack insurance (Vero) but they kept putting up the premium while the vehicle was depreciating and I had no claims. Got onto DGA which is a broker that specialises in 4x4 insurance. They were nearly half the price than what I was paying. Sold me.

Try QBE I went with them for our new 76 Series Cruiser. Just under $550 found them very good. You can get a Quote online. then if you ring them you might find that they will better it.
