Mechanical trade, quality workmanship.

Nav 8

Just had the Navara back to the gas installer for a after fit check over. All seems OK I said except for a bad rattle under the floor where the gas tank is fitted. Not a problem we will fix that, half hour later all fixed your right to go, just needed the tank guard bent a little. Off we go down the road and the rattle is still there. Now as an old retired mechanic who was very particular with the work I did, I decided If you want something done properly, do it yourself. At home in the garage I slid under the truck and found the rattle in all of 45 seconds, a exhaust heat shield touching the gas tank. Simple fix, remove heat shield and cut a small section out, fixed. Better have a look around and check for any other problems. Grabbed hold of the exhaust and give it a shake its loose.(exhaust was modified to fit gas tank) but farmed out to an exhaust specialist. Problem is only one nut on the flange that hold two pipes together, go to fit the nut and the thread is damaged, that's why there is no nut. Half hour later thread is repaired and nut fitted, job done. WHERE IS THE QUALITY WORKMANSHIP THEESE DAYS. Nav.

I decided years ago that it was better to do the job myself even if I had to buy tools to do it than let somebody else work on my vehicle.
The occasional lapses (too hard, not enough time etc) I've had over the years and had work done I've regretted it.
At least if you do it yourself you know that it is done properly and completely.

And if it stuffs up, there is no-one to blame but yourself.

This works if one has a modicum of mechanical savvy but can be bloody dangerous if one doesn't have a clue about what they are doing.

Unfortunately with the so called modern hi tech motors etc, the amount the average bloke(or sheila) can safely do is getting less and less.

Let's go back to the good old days, series Landrovers and F series Toyotas, where a bloke could fix anything with a hammer, a screwdriver and/or a length of fencing wire cut from the neighbours fence.

Disco.

I have been to some excellent mechanics which do top quality work at good prices, however I also get annoyed after I have paid for something which is (later found to be) simple and done badly.
